ForKids RESTORES HOPE IN SUFFOLK
Every year at ForKids we have headed down numerous unexpected
roads, but none has been more unexpected than this year’s
journey down I-58 to Suffolk.
When the Center for Hope and New
Beginnings (CHNB) approached us regarding
the possibility of a merger last spring,
our first thought was, “we can’t
take on more right now.” ForKids
had tripled our service delivery in
just twenty-four months and we
were wary about new growth.
But CHNB had been through five
Executive Directors in five years
and was looking for a way to
stabilize their family shelter and
build services for families in
Suffolk and Western Tidewater.
With the pro-bono help of the

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity from the community, our ForKids
parents were able to provide a joyful and fruitful holiday for their families.
The latter months of the year are times when most can appreciate the warmth
and comfort of being home, celebrating with family and friends, giving gifts, sharing
meals and welcoming in the new year. Volunteers assembled 211 Thanksgiving
baskets that provided meals to 170 families (all baskets, decorations and food items
were donated). For Christmas, our community friends donated $57,000 worth of toys
for the ForKids Holiday Shop (735 children received gifts).
Our clients were able to peruse the shop inventory and choose the perfect gifts for their
kids. Clients utilized earned vouchers to pay for their selected items. Vouchers are earned
for a variety of accomplishments and for general tasks, including completing job training,
helping in meal preparation, assisting office staff, caring for children of other
residents, and so on.

ForKids BLASTS OFF TO THE FINAL FRONTIER:
2009 ART AUCTION
ForKids proudly welcomed 400 guests to the Half
Moone Cruise and Celebration Center on Friday
March 20th. The ForKids 8th Annual Children’s
Art Auction raised $195,000 in support of
operational funding for programs for homeless
children and families. The theme was “Ending
Homelessness: the Final Frontier.” The outer space
theme played through the entire event with a stage
set with rockets, planets and moon rocks.
ForKids’ was thrilled to have Captain William
Shepherd as honorary Chairman. Captain Shepherd
logged 159 days in space as the first Commander
of the International Space Station. Tommy Griffiths
and Rick Rumble of WNOR-FM 99 were spectacular
as emcees. The Urban Arts Ensemble provided the
blast-off for the evening with their rhythmic drumming.
Then the Jim Newsom Quartet kept guests suspended
in space among the stars with their delightful sounds.
Guests bid on artwork created by the children in the
ForKids programs and by professional artists. The
best selling piece of children’s art, “Just Float” by
William (16), sold for $5,000 with the top professional
piece, “The Sky is Too Heavy to Hold My Dreams”, by
Clayton Singleton, edging just a bit higher to $5,250.
If you didn’t make it to this year’s Art
Auction, you can still enjoy the artwork
created by the children of ForKids by
purchasing either a limited edition matted
print, or a pack of five notecards. Contact
the ForKids main office at 622-6400.
With your gift of $50, you may select one
of five matted print designs.
