02. Introduction
Passive optical network (PON) is a system that brings optical fiber cabling and signals all or most
of the way to end-users. Depending on the end-users of PON fiber connection, PON can be
described as fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC), fiber-to-the-building (FTTB), or fiber-to-the-home (FTTH).
PON consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) located at the communication service provider's
office and a number of optical network units (ONUs) located near end-users. Typically, up to 32
ONUs can be connected to an OLT. Optical network is prefixed with the term passive because
optical transmission does not require any power or active electronic parts.
PON handles downstream signals by broadcasting them to all premises by sharing a single
