A Tribute to My Father
A local resident traces her roots from China to Canada and honours the generations who
came before her
by Susan Wong
Resident Susan Wong writes a moving account of her
family history to mark a special milestone for her father,
who has lived in the Collingwood neighbourhood for
the past 38 years.
July 11, 2011 marked 60 years since my father arrived in Canada.
In roughly 1895, our initial roots were established when my
paternal great-grandfather arrived in Nanaimo with his second
wife, with whom he raised six sons, all born in Canada. Great-
grandfather’s first wife remained in China with their three
children. My grandfather was one of these children in China and
would eventually have three sons of his own.
My father, Arthur Wah Chong Wong, was born in 1935, in Gow
Long village in Tai Shan county, and is the second eldest. After
losing his father and older brother early on, Dad was sponsored by
his relations in Canada in hopes of a better future. With the weight
of the world on his shoulders and just a small pack of clothes on
his back, Dad said farewell to his mother and younger brother in
Dunlevy Motors, Cordova and Gore 1951. He was just a boy, age 15, when he left China, and it would be
almost 18 years before he would see his family again.
Dad boarded the President Wilson to begin his 19-day boat ride
from Hong Kong to San Francisco. After arriving in San Fran, he

With the redevelopment of the Slocan Park Field House many new arts and culture initiatives
are coming to the Park. It is becoming a real centre of creativity for the neighbourhood.
In the spring the Still Moon Arts Society held Spirit Fish art and watershed workshops, Peggy

summer the Chill Leadership group run by Jeremy and Angela has been busy and creative in the
space including felting art workshops with Carmen Rosen.
These activities are in addition to the regular summer playground program and morning Tai The 9th annual Renfrew Ravine Moon
