New U.S. Food Safety Legislation
! Email from the USDA addressed to CFI member
“Dear Friends,
President Barack Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) into law on January 4, 2011.
FSMA mandates significant changes that should markedly improve the safety of our nation’s food
supply. The Act is focused on prevention of those problems that can make people sick. This, however,
requires that everyone in today’s global food chain be a responsible and accountable partner, at each
step, for controlling hazards that can cause illness.
We believe that this is a historic Act that will:
1. Involve the creation of a new food safety system;
2. Broaden prevention mandate and accountability;
3. Create a new system of import oversight;
4. Emphasize partnerships; and
5. Emphasize farm-to-table responsibility.
For general information about FSMA, please access FDA website at Click here .
Information about FSMA is available in Arabic at Click here
We look forward to communicating with you as FDA moves toward a prevention-based system to
protect the public's health.
Your participation is important; you can contact FDA with questions and comments concerning the Food

Council Directive 91/414/EEC concerning the placing of plant protection products on the
market lays down rules and procedures for approval of the active substances at EU-level and for the
authorization at Member State level of plant protection products (PPPs) containing these substances.
This Directive states that substances cannot be used in plant protection products unless they are
included in a positive EU list. Once a substance is included in the positive list Member States may
authorize the use of products containing them.
