 2 types of flu viruses circulating

◦ Seasonal flu virus

◦ Pandemic virus



 2 flu vaccines developed

SYMPTOM COMMON COLD INFLUENZA



Fever Rare Sudden Onset

(lasts 3-4 days)

Headache Rare Frequent



Aches & Pains Slight Usual

(often quite severe)

Weakness Rare/Mild Moderate to Extreme



Bed Ridden Rare Frequent

(may last 5-10 days)

Sniffles Common Sometimes



Sneezing Usual Sometimes



Sore Throat Common Sometimes



Cough Sometimes Usual

(Mild to Moderate) (can become severe)

 Person to person through droplets

◦ Cough

◦ Sneeze

◦ Contaminated Surface

 Rest away from others

 Keep personal items separate

 Disinfect items & surfaces

 One person as caregiver

 Wear disposable gloves

 Mask use

Call you health care provider if you

develop symptoms when:

 Pregnant

 Have heart or lung disease

 Have chronic health problems

 Are elderly

 Have illness that affects immune system

 Fast ordifficult breathing

 Increased drowsiness & irritability

 Not drinking enough fluids; signs of

dehydration

 Symptoms become worse

 Thermometer  Bleach/Household

 Soap Disinfectant

 Hand sanitizer  Paper towels



 Disposable gloves  Tissues



 Surgical masks  Extra supply of



 Acetaminophen special foods,

 Ibuprofen

medicine,

equipment

 Anyone 6 months or

older

 Needed every year

 Reduce risk of illness

 Reduce severity of

symptoms

 Wash hands often  Disinfect common

 Hand sanitizer surfaces

available  Stay home when sick

 Cover coughs &  Get the flu shot

sneezes

 Hands away from

face

 Tracking illness in Grey  Children excluded if have:

Bruce Schools ◦ Fever & Cough

 And one of following:

Sore throat, Aches & pains,

 Parents report Weakness

symptoms when ◦ Children under 5

notifying school of  Vomiting/Diarrhea may be present

 Fever may not be prominent

child’s absence

 Return when:

◦ No fever

◦ Well enough to participate

 Visitor restrictions  Personal Protective

◦ Remind visitors of healthy Equipment (PPE)

practices ◦ Mask

◦ Signage at entries ◦ Eye protection

 Staff exclusions ◦ Gloves & gown when

◦ 7 days after onset necessary

◦ No fever ◦ Hand hygiene
