Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat and Conference Center is a worker owned cooperative and intentional community.
The Breitenbush Credo
We of the Breitenbush Community dedicate ourselves to living mindfully in the spirit of love, unity, honesty and service.
W e see ourselves as guardians of Breitenbush Hot Springs, safeguarding the Earth and healing waters, assuring their continued availability to
all beings who respect them. Our primary service is to provide a healing retreat and conference center that promotes holistic health and spiritual
growth and facilitates the gathering of people in celebration of the experience of life.
O ur community is supported by the services we provide. We are committed
to the health and well-being of ourselves and our families, to live, work, play and grow together harmoniously.
We mutually support and respect each person’s dignity, and awaken to the Spirit within
each of us that acknowledges we are all One.
The community is committed to a lifestyle conducive to holistic childrearing and personal growth. Our precepts for self growth include personal
accountability, honest communication, awareness of our actions and the quality of their results, directing our energies to the positive, expressing
appreciation for what others do, correcting what is clearly not working for the community or for us as individuals, assuming the responsibility for
creating and sharing abundance, and choosing and re-choosing to be together.
W e structure our lives such that we can experience daily the rewards of success, peacefulness and joy.
It is our hope that the thriving community we create will be an inspiration to others in their exploration of lifestyle and community.
W e also extend ourselves to the greater society in which we live, the world community,
and commit ourselves to being socially, spiritually, politically and environmentally responsible.
Our Mission
To provide a safe and potent environment where people can renew and evolve in ways they never imagined.

We In v i t e Y ou . . .
for a workshop, personal retreat, or just the day!
The Setting
Nestled in the ancient forest with a pristine river and abundant hot springs, Breitenbush is a place of timeless beauty where
connection with the natural world is both vast and intimate and where every season brings unique gifts. Our 154 acre sanctuary is
surrounded by national forest.
Cabins
Amidst the tall trees, the simple, rustic cabins are kept cozy year round
with heat from the Earth’s hot waters. Some have a sink and toilet and
bathhouses are nearby.
Trails
Trails radiate from Breitenbush through ancient forest cathedrals, past
cascading rivers and to magnificent mountain vistas. The hike to the
Breitenbush Gorge is an easy adventure and the hike up to Devil’s Peak is
for those seeking a challenge. Sack lunches are available from the kitchen
with a day’s notice.
Sustainability
At Breitenbush you are “off the grid”. Power for all of our facilities
is provided by the efficient use of electricity generated by our own
hydroelectric plant. Heat for all of the buildings is drawn from the
generous hot waters of the Earth.
Visit Breitenbush.com for the weather forecast,
concert schedule, grounds map, photo gallery
and much more!
Inipi Ceremony (Sweat Lodge)
We are privileged to host a monthly Inpipi Ceremony
open to all at no cost. (See page 35 for details.)
Daily Well-Being
Programs
Move! Stretch! Celebrate! Connect! Several well-being
programs are offered daily which may include yoga,
meditation, EDGU, guided hikes, systems tours, concerts,
dances, singing, poetry readings, Breitenbush history and
more! These are open to all guests at no cost.

Facilities
The Historic Lodge has been a welcoming center for over 75 years. It is
home to the dining room, library and the North Wing, a large event space
where guests enjoy a wide variety of activities including concerts, dances,
readings and workshops. The uniquely beautiful Sanctuary is open at all
times for reflection, meditation and yoga. The Forest Shelter and Cedar
River Yurt are meeting spaces, circular in shape, with light pouring in from
above. The Gift Shop offers an inspiring selection of books and artisan
crafted gifts.
Vegetarian Cuisine
Bountiful vegetarian meals, mostly organic, are served buffet style three
times daily. We honor requests for wheat, egg and dairy-free, as well as
gluten-free (may contain trace amounts of gluten). Sack lunches can be
ordered a day
ahead for your
hike. Recipes
are available
in the popular
Breitenbush
Cookbook.
Healing Arts and Massage
Treat yourself to a 90 minute session in the expert hands of one of our
caring licensed massage therapists. Several massage modalities are offered
for deep relaxation and healing. Reservations can be made up to two
weeks in advance.
Conferences and Meetings
Our idyllic setting is highly supportive of creative and focused workshops,
meetings and conferences. With a variety of meeting spaces we
accommodate large and small groups. Contact events@breitenbush.com.

Hot Springs
The hot springs have long been a destination for those
seeking healing, rejuvenation and community. Three
Meadow Pools are lined with smooth rocks and overlook
the river. Four tiled Spiral Tubs are aligned in the cardinal
directions with increasing temperatures. They are
adjoined by the cedar tub cold plunge. The Steam Sauna
is a whimsical cedar cabin resting atop bubbling waters.
Swim suits are optional in the soaking areas. Most people
do not wear swim suits. We encourage you to use what is
most comfortable for you. The atmosphere we strive for is
one of sanctuary and respect.

of others is part of your life dream and you
feel held back by fear. Designed to support
people who long to share themselves through

you love in front of other people in a very
safe environment. Bring along something to present to the group!
You’ll learn how to: be in front of an audience even when
you’re afraid; alter your relationship with fear and recognize the
ways your mind creates it; become a loving presence for yourself
during very challenging moments; create a vision of what is really
important to you and take steps to bring it into your life.
Heather Wertheimer, MA, brings 20 years of experience as a
therapist and 10 years of teaching yoga to this workshop, in addition to
her current life work touring full time as a musician since 2002.

Ancient Forest Update
Oregon Forests in the Spotlight
by Chandra LeGue, Old-growth Campaign Coordinator
Oregon Wild (formerly Oregon Natural Resources Council) www.oregonwild.org
Though sometimes neglected by residents of and visitors to Oregon’s wetter-side, the wildlands of eastern Oregon offer some of
our state’s most beautiful landscapes—with mountain and desert vistas, huge orange-barked Ponderosa pines, iconic rivers like the
John Day and Deschutes, and home for hundreds of species of
wildlife, including gray wolves and wild salmon.
Like the forests west of the Cascades, the eastside’s National
Forests (covering about 9 million acres of public land) have also
been altered drastically by more than a century of mismanagement
and abuse. A legacy of fire suppression, road building and
industrial logging, compounded by global warming, has left
eastside landscapes in desperate need of restoration. Biologists
warn that our remaining old-growth forests must be safeguarded,
and that forest management should focus on restoring forests and
watersheds across the landscape.
Restoration activities could include reducing fuels around
homes and communities, thinning out small trees that have
grown since natural fires last burned and now pose a threat to old-
growth, and using prescribed fire to restore a more natural cycle.
Watershed restoration activities can include removing unneeded
roads and improving streamside vegetation for the benefit of fish.
One example of restoration with broad support is playing out near Sisters, Oregon. There, the Glaze Forest Restoration Project
area adjoins Black Butte Ranch and includes natural meadows, old-growth Ponderosa pines, and second growth pine forests that were
once heavily logged. A diverse group of collaborators, led by Oregon Wild, worked together to find agreement on what ecologically-
appropriate treatments could be done to both reduce fire risk near the resort and improve forest conditions without further negative
impacts to the area. Hopefully, this example will lead to much more ecological restoration across Oregon that will benefit fish, wildlife,
and forest health for generations to come.

News From Our Circle
by Peter Moore
Nature Deficit Disorder and the Perennial Philosophy
There is a concept, explored for centuries, of the “Perennial Philosophy”, or, as described in
wikipedia, “philosophia perennis—the notion of the universal recurrence of philosophical insight
independent of epoch or culture, including universal truths on the nature of reality, humanity or
consciousness.” Over the years, I’ve studied (dabbled in) the history and development of this idea—
that there is a common, eternal philosophy, innate to human consciousness, in its essence mystical
and underlying all religions. In a world divided and savaged by fundamentalists, there has thankfully
always been human intuition and initiative towards spiritual unity and cooperation.
I believe that our own time in human history is characterized by an expansion of the role of the Perennial Philosophy. Those
universal truths on the nature of reality—an esoteric sideshow for so many centuries—now seed visions of sustainability through unity
and cooperation, inspiring and informing educational programs, holistic endeavors and social organizations all over the planet.
This is relevant because our survival is beginning to depend upon it. There is a conversation taking place worldwide concerned
with topics once considered arcane, now normal—the necessity of nature, energy production and use, global warming and its causes,
inalienable rights of children and indigenous, sustainability of food production and distribution, the place of the arts, and so many
more. Across our world, countless human organizations and millions of people are mobilized to apply best practices within their
spheres of influence to support such causes.
Here at Breitenbush, we’re all about this inquiry, it permeates into our everyday lives like rain into natural fabric. Dreaming into
and living green isn’t about being a perfect model (we haven’t arrived yet)—rather, it is about applying oneself in one’s sphere of
influence (family, school, work, revolutionary cell) towards the principles and practical applications of the Perennial Philosophy. In a
world demonstrably finite, anyone paying attention knows we need to do this.
Another thing I’ve been paying attention to is the syndrome called Nature Deficit Disorder (NDD). It’s a lot like Attention
Deficit Disorder (ADD), but far more pervasive and pernicious, also less recognized and understood. The vast majority of kids, and
adults for that matter, suffer from it. No surprise in a culture where everybody seems to gaze 9 hours a day into a screen of one kind
or another.
I bring this up because there’s a link between the Perennial Philosophy and Nature Deficit Disorder. What Breitenbush has is
the natural remedy for NDD, mostly because of its stunning physical setting of mountains, river and forest, but also because of the
commitment of the Breitenbush Co-op to practical applications of the Perennial Philosophy—conscious evolution, sustainable energy,
organic food, holistic healing, egalitarian governance, and authentic joy.
There is another center just one watershed over from Breitenbush that is also a spontaneous outgrowth of the Perennial
Philosophy, and also graced with the natural cure for NDD. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center (www.opalcreek.org) is an organization
providing essential learning experiences for students of all ages. Through their hands-on teaching methodologies, people are able to
fully immerse themselves in the ancient forest. By sharing its special places with so many children, and educating them about the
innate processes we are all a part of, Opal Creek is helping to secure a healthy planet for the next generations. The trails, water falls,
swimming holes and ancient forest habitat are unparalleled.
How fortunate we are in this neck of the Oregon woods to have Breitenbush and Opal Creek, two centers exploring the nature
of reality, humanity and consciousness within the context of wild nature.

InIpI ceremony (sweat Lodge)
Breitenbush is privileged to offer an Inipi Ceremony (sweat
lodge) once a month that is open to everyone without additional
fees. Traditionally, participants make offerings to the leader and

Breitenbush also appreciates any donations that offset the costs
of wood and caring for the leaders. Participants are responsible
for the fees of any other Breitenbush services they use (hot
