  The Elect Lady                 Our text begins:
          2 John 1-2
                                 FOCAL 2 John 1The elder unto the elect

                                 Who are these people? Well, the elder is a reference to
                                 the writer, the Apostle John. But who were the elect
                                 lady and her children. Some have tried to say that John
                                 penned a personal letter to a widowed Christian lady he
                                 knew, and some commentators believe that. This would
                                 not be out of the question. For instance, the letter of
                                 Philemon was written to a slave-owner concerning the
                                 runaway slave turned Christian Onesimus. Paul wrote
Rock Hill Baptist Church         this letter to make sure that Philemon treated Onesimus
                                 with love on his return. So could 2 John be written to a

If John were addressing a person, it seems that his                                                         Christ,
