Our Amazing Camp!
On Wednesday 25 May 2011, the Year 6s went to Nanga Bush
Camp in Dwellingup to learn how to be independent and to have
fun! The adventures we had were unbelievable!
We arrived at Nanga Bush Camp and had lunch. We found out
who was in our dorms and what number our dorm was. In my
dorm was Violet, Hayley, Emmy and I. I enjoyed being in the
dorm with them because they’re my friends. Our dorm number
was fourteen and according to Miss Speering, it was the dorm
everyone wanted to visit. Hayley, Violet, Emmy and I had so much
fun together. On Thursday we all went to Baden Powell Water
Spout. We had to walk there and cross the river at Tom’s Crossing.
Luckily nobody fell in! When we arrived at Baden Powell we split
into our activity groups. My group went rafting and it was so
much fun! Our guide’s name was Jason but we called him Jay.
When we got into the rafts the water was freezing. There were
two rafts and when we started to paddle we played a game called
Cat and Mouse. Lots of people fell in during this game and it was
so funny watching it happen. When we paddled back everyone
was soaked. I had a great time and I hope to do it again one day.
On Friday it was my group’s turn to go on the Flying Fox. I was
really scared and worried when we were walking to the tower.

Year 10 News
The Year 10s have been working hard this term in the lead up to their first set of exams which commenced this morning. The exams continue
next week until Wednesday. It has been pleasing to see the positive and focused approach the Year 10s have been displaying during this time.
The focus in both PCT and Health Education has been exam preparation and career education. The girls have been covering topics such as
study skills, the study environment, exam technique, stress management, career options, resumes and interview preparation. They have each
received a Job Guide book and have enjoyed working through the activities.
Next week the Year 10s will attend two important events over two days. On Thursday, half the cohort will attend the Reflection Day while the
other half will attend the Course Information Day, both held at the College. The girls will then swap on the Friday. Both days will offer the girls
important information and provide them with valuable experiences.
Relay For Life
On Saturday 16 April, fourteen girls from Year 10 participated in the Cancer Council’s
Relay for Life. This event raises money for cancer research and ultimately supports those
living with and survivors of cancer. Our team, “we CAN-CER vive” kept the baton moving
around the WA Athletics stadium for twenty-four hours. As a result of our team leader,
Grace Hendriks’s (Dillon) endless efforts to encourage the team to raise money, we were
runners-up in the most funds raised by a school group, raising $5,648.00. We also won
the prize for the best fight back message, which was our team name. Throughout the
whole event many memorable and special moments were shared, however, as our attempt
to stay awake for the full twenty- four hours failed in the early hours of the morning, we
designated times for each person to walk. With our legs throbbing and eyes struggling to
stay open we thought of those suffering with cancer which made the whole experience worthwhile. Although this experience challenged us,
we all had a great time and look forward to doing it next year.
Participants
Grace Hendriks, Monique Ziegelaar (Kelly), Melissa Huston (O’Reilly), Darcy Harwood (de la Hoyde), Simona Vitelli (de la Hoyde), Jenna Carlino

Amanda Young Foundation Report
Over the mid-term break, Ashleigh Small (Year 11, O’Reilly), Laura Pecorari (Year 11, Dillon) and I attended the Amanda Young, Young Leaders
Eco Health Summit. In total there were thirty-nine other students from schools across Western Australia. Throughout the camp we embarked
on many challenges working as a whole team to complete our tasks. We also attended workshops to learn more about ourselves and our
personality types. We completed the Myer-Briggs Personality Type Test and we also looked at our wellbeing and strategies for balancing our
lives. However, amongst the fun stuff, we also looked closely at the focus of the actual Amanda Young Foundation. The Foundation was
created in memory of Amanda Young who died of meningococcal in 1998 and its purpose is to increase awareness about the disease and to
help those who have suffered in some way. The whole camp was funded by the Foundation and in particular Amanda’s hard working parents,
Barry and Lorraine Young. It was such an amazing experience for us to be involved in and we have gained so many extra skills, knowledge
and friends that we will have for life. Thank you to Mr Elder and the College for allowing us the opportunity to participate in this program.
Megan Hope (Year 11, O’Donnell)
Congratulations to:
Darcy Harwood (Year 10, de la Hoyde) on her selection to participate in the Sir Charles Court Young Leaders Program in the July school
holidays. Darcy was nominated as she has achieved excellent results in History and demonstrated leadership qualities within the College
Community. We look forward to hearing more about your experiences when you return, Darcy.
Boarding News
The June exeat weekend was anticipated with much pleasure by all the girls – and their families I suspect. It signals the half
term break, time with loved ones and the opportunity to be away from boarding for a short while. It is also encouraging to see the
enthusiasm with which girls returned to Boarding and their boarding friends at the conclusion of the weekend. Congratulations go
to the Year 11s and 12s for the focus they are giving to their study and exams. In the midst of all the work being undertaken there
is still the time and the inclination for recreational activities. A large number of the girls went to see the latest installment of
Pirates of the Carribean and though there were some mixed reviews, generally the girls enjoyed the night out. The other main
events for the girls before the exeat weekend were the St Hilda’s River Cruise and the mixed games at Methodist Ladies College.
Mrs Linda Bulloch, Head of Boarding
MLC Visit
On Sunday 29 May, the Years 7, 8 and 9s went to a
mixed netball tournament at Methodist Ladies College.
All the girls got ready and hopped on the bus at 12.30 pm and had
a very loud and enthusiastic bus trip to MLC. The girls were excited
and ready to have lots of fun playing netball, football and soccer
with different schools. Once we arrived at the school there was a
lovely welcoming from MLC and we moved to the oval and started
choosing our netball teams. It worked out very well as we had an
even number of girls in each team, with our photographer, Jessica
Reid, left over to take the pictures because of her fractured arm.
The whistle was blown and the girls were ready to win their netball.
They were determined and were ready to beat the other schools.
The netball games started off okay, then as the boys gave up on
the netball rules it turned into basketball. With the boys starting to
dominate, the girls had to pick it up a bit and started changing the
rules as well. In the end you couldn’t even tell it was netball!
At lunch time we headed off to the MLC dining room to have
a sausage sizzle. We sat out on the grass out the front of their
boarding house.
After lunch it was straight back into the action again but this time
it was football and soccer.
The girls had a wonderful time judging by the smiles and chit chatter
on the bus trip back. When we were driving back to Santa Maria,
we got a surprise from Ms Bulloch who stopped out the front of
McDonald’s and bought a soft serve ice-cream for us - very spoilt.
Brittany Kent (Year 8, Kelly)
River Cruise
On Saturday night thirty Year 9 and 10 girls went on a Captain
Cook river cruise hosted by St Brigid’s. The boat was packed with
boarders from both girls schools as well as Scotch and Hale College.
The DJ was great and kept everyone dancing all night. To escape the
crowded dance floor we moved to the front of the boat to get some
fresh air and views of the passing city. Overall it was a great night!
