Burj Dubai

– reaching

for the stars

Imagine a building almost twice as tall as the 448-metre high Empire State Building and you will have an idea of the giddying height of Burj Dubai (Dubai Tower).

This breathtaking steel, concrete and glass tower, which when finished will be the tallest building in the world, is under construction in the United Arab Emirates.

It is expected to be completed in 2008.

its own transformer station in which the volt

Costly conversion project in Lithuania

Converting a four-storey shop premi-

ses into offices for rental was not wit-

hout its problems. The proposed new

electricity supply, for instance, not

only looked like being very costly, it

also appeared to need a lot of valua-

ble space.

But both problems were solved by

using the Kabeldon IP-system.

The property involved is in Kaunas, the

second largest city in Lithuania. Kaunas,

which is located almost in the middle of the

country, has a population of some 400,000.

The new owner of the building realised that

converting into offices for rental would neces

sitate improving the standard of the premises

and going in for a completely new layout.

New product launched in Mexico

The first installation of Kabeldon premoulded cable

joints with integrated sheath sectionalising for cross-

bonding of cable screen, type JX-A 123 kV, has

been carried out. This premiere event took place in

northern Mexico, when cables were being laid from

a power station to the City of Hermosillo, familiarly

known as the City of the Sun. And this cable acces-

sory newcomer received a very warm welcome.

The straightthrough cable joint, type JS, was tested in 2005.

Following on this, the version JXA for all types of cables of the 52

123 kV range was also developed, enabling it to be subsequently

typetested and approved by early 2007. So ABB people were look

ing forward with a great deal of excitement to the installation in

Mexico in summer 2007. ABB’s representative, Anneli Pettersson,

who attended the premiere, commented as follows:

“We were there to get onthespot input about the installa

tion and to assist if any questions arose in connection with this

premiere event. As it was, things worked out very well, and the

fitters from Cables Subterráneos were extremely efficient. They

thought that the installation was easy to perform, so the JXA

was really well received.”

According to Anneli, six fitters worked side by side in the

hole, taking turns, twobytwo, to tackle each phase.

“They’d all been trained before in the installation of the

Elteknik, an electrical installation outfit in Alingsås, Sweden, brought a recent job to a successful conclusion with the

help of a good neighbour. The neighbour in question was ABB, who helped Elteknik to figure out the design of a 1,500 A

to solve.
