Nordic walking companions
A special tour for nature & Nordic walking lovers
Explore and enjoy Iceland’s scenery, its clean fresh air and its stunning natural wonders on a
tour that allows you to actively indulge in the outdoors, to share a great walking experience
with companions and to refresh your senses.
This tour is specially designed for Nordic walking lovers or the ones who would like to
become one. We will not only admire numerous sights and gorgeous landscapes but walking
to and through them will be our every day’s goal; a dynamic Nordic walking adventure
which not only exercises your entire body, releases tensions in neck and shoulders and
benefits the back but which moreover allows you a deep insight into the Land of Ice and
Fire. And at the end of each energetic day out in the nature we all contentedly enjoy
delicious and healthy Icelandic cuisine and relax in one of Iceland’s cosy guesthouses or
country hotels.
The tour starts at an easy pace and covers the basic principles of Nordic walking. Throughout
the tour intermediate and advanced Nordic walking work-outs are coming up, always in
accordance with the group. Our professional trainer assists each participant in finding their
right pace. You can either bring your own equipment or our trainer will find the right poles for
you from our own qualitative selection.
We look forward to walk Iceland with you!

Itinerary
Day 1, Sunday, 11.05.2008:
Arrival in Iceland
Upon your arrival at the International Airport Keflavík at [time] with [Airline,
flightnumber] you will be greeted by your Iceland Explorer representative.
Depending on the arrival time we will have the possibility today to visit the famous
Blue Lagoon, where you can relax in its soothing geothermal waters very rich in
minerals like silica. Afterwards we will take you to a charming guesthouse in
Reykjavík. In the evening you may stroll around downtown and get your first
impression of the capital city. You may enjoy dinner at one of Reykjavík’s fancy
restaurants. Overnight at a guesthouse in Reykjavik.
Day 2, Monday, 12.05.2008:
Snaefellsnes National Park [B, D]
After breakfast you will leave the city and head towards the peninsula Snaefellsnes
with its mystic glacier and volcano, where you get to know your Nordic walking guide
who will accompany you throughout the tour. He is a professional Nordic walking
trainer and will give you a first introduction on the upcoming walks and exercises as
well as the routes and areas chosen for your Nordic walking experience. Today you
will start with an easy work-out along the coast near Arnastapi where you can enjoy
an absolutely abundant bird life. Lunch also takes place optionally at Arnastapi. After
driving a little more westward we start our next walk at Dritvík, formerly famous for
fishery, towards Djúpalonsandur, to watch the lifting stones that served for
comparing fishermen’s strength in the past. As time allows we stop at some other
interesting sites and head for Hotel Hamar where we stock up energy with a
delicious dinner and stay overnight.
Day 3, Tuesday, 13.05.2008:
Thingvellir National Park [B, L, D]
Today we depart towards Thingvellir National Park, first driving along the beautiful
Hvalfjörður where we stop for the first work-out. Afterwards we reach Thingvellir,
the site of the world’s first parliament, which was declared UNESCO World Heritage
in the year 2004. We will tour along this magnificent and awe-inspiring area, mostly
flat and hence easy to walk. Amongst other things we see the old parliament site,
Thingvellir church and the waterfall Öxararfoss. We will also enjoy a packed lunch at
Thingvellir. Later today we head into the direction of Laugarvatn, a very famous
recreation area among Icelanders, close to the farmhouse Efsta Dal where we have
dinner and stay overnight.
Day 4, Wednesday, 14.05.2008:
Gullfoss Geysir Seljalandsfoss Skogarfoss Vik [B, L, D]
In the morning we depart for Iceland’s most popular natural wonders: Gullfoss, the
golden fall, and the Geysir area, where you will watch hot water & steam rising high
into the air from the hot spring Strokkur. Afterwards we proceed towards the south
coast and stop at the magnificent Seljalandsfoss and a few kilometres further we
climb up to Skogarfoss. After a day of exploring these sights and after having
enjoyed a packed lunch our today’s Nordic walk will take place in the neighbourhood

of the charming coastal town of Vik. We stay overnight at Countryhotel Höfdabrekka
where we also have dinner.
Day 5, Thursday, 15.05.2008:
Skaftafell National Park [B, L, D]
This morning we head further east towards Skaftafell, a National Park with very
diverse vegetation and superb walking tracks. We will spend most of the day with
walking and exercising, with a well-balanced rotation between active Nordic walking
and hiking at an easy pace. One site we might head for is the astonishing waterfall
Svartifoss, a slight up-hill walk. Other interesting options are the beautifully
overgrown hill Sjonarsker or the edge of Skaftafellsjökull. On the way we have a
tasty packed lunch. After this very active day outdoors and a great deal of fresh
Icelandic air we head towards Kirkjubaerklaustur and our guesthouse for tonight
where we enjoy a hearty dinner.
Day 6, Friday, 16.05.2008:
Landmannalaugar OR alternative: Thorsmörk or Hekla region [B, L, D]
Today’s programme depends on the departure date and current weather and road
conditions. If the highland track to Landmannalaugar has already opened we will
enjoy a wonderful day of exercising and walking (e.g. Blahnukur or through the
Laugahraun lava field) and afterwards a bath in the hot springs in this magnificent
area and might also stop at the gorge of Elgjá. Alternatively we spend a lovely day
with walking the wild and romantic glacier valley of Thorsmörk or the area around
Hekla, Iceland’s most famous and feared volcano, which was believed to be the
entrance to hell in former times. A lunch pack is also included today. On the way
back we will stop at the Hekla info centre, a new and very informative exhibition on
the volcano. Dinner and overnight are planned at Hotel Hekla tonight.
Day 7, Saturday, 17.05.2008:
Reykjanes Peninsula Reykjavik [B]
After breakfast we depart for the capital city. We are choosing a very nice side path
along the Reykjanes Peninsula and visit the geothermal area of Krýsuvik. The
peninsula is also a perfect place for our last exercise. If we haven’t had the time for
the Blue Lagoon on the arrival day (due to late arrivals) we will complete our outdoor
adventure today with bathing and relaxing in the lagoon’s soothing geothermal
waters. After one week of walking the outdoors and exploring Iceland’s natural
wonders you have then the chance to indulge in Reykjavik’s busting life: relaxing,
sightseeing, shopping & dining. We will be happy to recommend sights and
restaurants. Dinner tonight takes place on your own expense and overnight again at
a lovely guesthouse in Reykjavik.
