Music
magazine

Music magazine task
For are music magazine assignment we were asked to select are preferred
music genre to construct a new music magazine ( Front page, Contents
page, Double page spread)
The first step after the genre for the magazine was to figure out the specific
target audience. Subsequently I had to know what the basic magazine
conventions were and if I’d subvert or conform.
If I chose to conform, the magazine would look more realistic but would
look to common, so I chose to subvert with certain aspects.
Target Audience
I suggested the target audience for my magazine called ‘Blackout’ would
be afro Caribbean, from teenagers to 30 year olds. I suggested it was
targeted at afro Caribbean's because of rap being founded in a black
community and consisting mainly blacks.
My magazine is not aimed at a specific gender I wanted it to encourage
both. To make sure it wasn’t male dominated I included female artist such
as ‘Rhianna’.
Addressing the readership
My audience was mostly attracted
through the images of people in
the magazine, because they are
young teenagers who are in the
type of costume rappers should
where.
This makes the audience feel
more involved and makes them
think that could be them in a
magazine. However I also
included headlines of current
famous artists such as ‘ Lil
Wayne’.
Institutions
I would prefer my magazine to be sold in mostly every retailer, however I don’t
think the majority of the people would purchase it. So it would be mainly in
newsagents where teenagers are likely to see it. This may give the idea my
magazine is locked to a specific demographic.
Forms and Conventions
I conformed to the main forms and
conventions of real music magazines
such as the masthead, barcodes sell
lines and main image to convey attitude.
If I didn’t follow any of these my
magazine would look odd, and wouldn’t
attract any type of audience or buyer.
However I subverted to the minor forms
and conventions of magazines because
these wouldn’t add a major effect. I didn’t
include the date, cover lines and puns.
Representational Issues
•My magazine represents particular social groups by
the use of language and text on the different pages. It is
mostly informal because rap tends to include informal
language so this convention would be used to aim at
my specific social group and let them relate to my
magazine. Examples of these effects are explanation
marks and colloquialisms.
•Furthermore the posing of the people in the images,
represent specific social groups because it’s a way
young teenage rappers tend to pose, some groups
would refer to them as ‘gangsters’.
Technical and Construction
Aspects
Throughout this task I have used
different technical software's and
gained different skills as I was going
along.
For each page I done a first draft and
a final draft which made me see an
improvement, also it made me work
for the best result.
Furthermore, I established that
Photoshop was not ideal for the
constructing of my magazine, however
it also has a unique tools, to let me
visually develop my photos better than
I would of on Microsoft publisher.
Comparing
I'm glad that we had a chance to do
the school magazine, because it gave
me a boost when making my music
magazine, such as getting familiar
with the Photoshop and publisher
tools, and finding websites for good
title fonts to use.
Ialso included familiar
conventions to the
prelim task such as
barcodes and sell lines,
they were used straight
away.
