What is DAAD?
► German national agency for international academic cooperation
  and exchange: Independent association of universities
► We provide scholarships, information, and counseling about
  studying and research in Germany
► All academic levels, all fields, varied lengths of stay
► Regional Office for the US and Canada in New York City
General Requirements and Conditions
► DAAD scholarships are highly competitive and recipients are selected by
  independent selection committees on the basis of outstanding academic record
  and convincing and feasible project proposals or statements of purpose.
► Faculty or students enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program at an accredited
  college or university in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. Recent graduates
  may also apply.
► There are no age limits to apply for a DAAD scholarship.
Tips for Success

► Express why a stay in Germany is critical for your academic or
  professional goals.

► Obtain a letter of invitation from a German professor or institution.

► Explain clearly why you chose the location or program you did.

► Submit quality letters of recommendations.

► Make sure your application is on time and complete.

Study Scholarships for Graduates

► Support for one or two years of
  study in Germany
► Can be used to earn a Master’s
  degree – some taught in English – at
  a German university
► German language ability should
  be commensurate with needs
► Final-year undergraduate students
  may apply
► 60 awarded annually
Research Grants

► 1 to 10 months (with the possibility of a one-year extension)
► For PhD candidates and postdocs, must have well-defined
  research project (also to complete PhD in Germany)
► Around 30 short term (< 6 mo.) and 60 long-term awarded
  annually
► TIP: Invitation by host institution essential
RISE professional

► For undergraduate DAAD alumni, or any
  recent graduates or graduate students.
► 6-12 week summer placements in industry
  internships with leading German companies.
► German requirements depend on the
  nature of the internship.
► Scholarships and housing assistance are provided.
► NEW: 2 week intensive language course for RISE and RISE pro
  participants with little or no German
EMGIP – Bundestag Internships

 ► Internships for 2 months at
   German parliament
 ► Advanced undergrads or
   graduate students
 ► Fields: political science, int’l
   relations, law, history,
   economics, or German.
 ► Must be comfortable in
   written and spoken German
Summer Courses

► Summer courses at German Universities for juniors, seniors,
  and grad students

► Hundreds of courses to choose from

► Scholarships only for courses taught in German –
  2 years minimum language requirement
Intensive Language Courses
► Learn German for 8 weeks at top language institutes in Germany
► Any field except English, German, or other modern language
  or literature
► Must have 3 semesters of college German
Research Visit Grant for Faculty

 ► Opportunities for scholars to pursue research in all academic
   disciplines for one to three months

 ► Must hold PhD and have been working in research or teaching full
  time for at least two years

 ► Applicants should posses adequate knowledge of German to carry
   out their proposed research

 ► The grants are awarded for research projects and cannot be used
   for travel only.
DAAD Visiting Professorship Program

► Opportunities for professors or others to teach in Germany

► Must have invitation from German institution

► Courses in English or German – and all fields eligible

► Deadlines: July 15 or January 15
Re-Invitation Program

► For former DAAD one-year scholarship holders

► Well-defined research project

► One to three months at a university or research institute in
  Germany
RISE worldwide

 ► Opportunities for researchers in science and engineering to host a
   German RISE intern

 ► DAAD will support these short-term summer internships by awarding
   scholarships to successful applicants to help cover part of the living
   and travel costs

 ► Project proposals for summer 2012 may be submitted from
   October 10 to November 27, 2012
