Pay as you go support
Overview
Pay as you go support is a convenient and economical way of any skater
accessing superior sports science support. A range of services are offered and
skaters can select the product or type of assistance which will specifically help
them to enhance their performance and overcome any barriers they are
facing. The pay as you go support is designed to provide the “skater-coach-
parent team” with access to exceptional sports science assistance as and
when they need it.
Skaters who need help with just one or two aspects of their training would
particularly benefit from pay as you go support. The skater can select which
service they require, enter the information requested in the support
application form, pay online and within 7-21 days will receive their product or
service and full written guidelines. On application skaters also have the option
to request a telephone consultation with a member of TSA staff on receipt of
their product or service. The range of services includes; periodised training
plans; strength training plans; anaerobic and aerobic fitness training plans;
plyometric training plans; flexibility training plans; problem move analysis and
prescriptive reports; video analysis and reports; IJS programme reviews and
advice; sports nutrition plans; sports psychology training and fitness testing.
The services offered are explained below:
Periodised training plan
Periodisation is an essential tool to ensure a skater is in peak physical and
mental condition at the exact time of their most major competitive goal of the
year. This plan provides a comprehensive overview of the training which
should be performed on ice and off ice in strength, cardiovascular, plyometric
and flexibility. Each plan is tailored to the individual skater, their ability and
goals.

Strength training plan
A programme of exercises to improve skating related strength constructed in
six – eight week units and periodised to ensure a skater reaches peak
strength at the time of their major competitive goal. Exercises are based on
skater’s responses to the application form, using the equipment available to
them and using activities suitable to their age, gender, discipline and fitness
level.

Anaerobic training plan
A programme of exercises to improve skating related anaerobic fitness
constructed in six – eight week units and periodised to ensure a skater
reaches peak anaerobic fitness at the time of their major competitive goal.
Exercise recommendations are based on skater’s responses to the application
form, using the equipment available to them and using activities suitable to
their age, gender, discipline and fitness level.

Aerobic training plan
A programme of exercises to improve skating related aerobic fitness
constructed in six – eight week units and periodised to ensure a skater
reaches peak cardiovascular fitness at the time of their major competitive
goal. Exercise recommendations are based on skater’s responses to the
application form, using the equipment available to them and using activities
suitable to their age, gender, discipline and fitness level.

Plyometric training plan
A programme of exercises to improve skating related power in burst activities
such as jumping. The programme is constructed in six – eight week units and
periodised to ensure a skater reaches peak power at the time of their major
competitive goal. Exercise recommendations are based on skater’s responses
to the application form, using the equipment available to them and using
activities suitable to their age, gender, discipline and fitness level.

Flexibility training plan
A programme of exercises to improve skating related flexibility in an area of
weakness. The programme is gradual and progressive, and if performed in
accordance with instructions, can enable a skater to perform moves they
never thought within their capabilities. Exercise recommendations are based
on skater’s responses to the application form, using the equipment available
to them and using activities suitable to their age, gender, discipline and
fitness level. Skaters can also have a programme to specifically build the
flexibility for an element they wish to achieve such as a Biellmann spin or six
o’clock spiral.

Movement video analysis
A pictorial breakdown of a skater’s selected element or movement separating
it into a series of stages from a provided DVD. The movement can be viewed
as a series of steps and important aspects of the movement can be
measured. For example the height, length and speed into the tightest position
can be provided for jumps.

Movement video analysis and prescriptive training plan
Skaters can select a “problem element” and send a clear DVD of the
movement. The element is broken into a series of pictures of each of the
stages and the physiological and physical deficiencies which are preventing
the skater from correctly performing the element are identified. The skater
receives a programme of exercises to help overcome the physiological and
physical problems preventing their success in the element.

Programme video analysis and IJS assessment
From a DVD of the skater’s competitive routine the, TSA IJS expert performs
an assessment of the routine content and checks the elements included and
levels of each. The skater receives a written report detailing any areas on
which they may have to work, what work is necessary, and any errors in
content identified.

Nutritional assessment and report
A breakdown of the energy and nutrient content of the skater’s diet from a
diet diary kept for a short period of time. The results of the analysis are
provided along with comments on areas in which the skater could improve
their performance by making changes to their meal and snack content, timing
or balance.

Nutritional planning and consultation
For skaters with a specific nutritional goal there is the opportunity to receive a
breakdown of the energy and nutrient content of their diet from a diet diary
kept for a short period of time. Then, in telephone consultation with the TSA
representative, the skater can discus their individual nutritional needs; For
example, a sports nutrition plan for a skater with coeliac disease, advice on
how to plan meals when competing two programmes in one day. The TSA
representative can then create a tailored plan for the skater to move towards
their nutritional goal. This service is also available as a course of four monthly
instalments each accompanied by a telephone consultation with a TSA advisor
to help the skater through their difficulties.

Psychology training plan
A programme of mental training exercises to overcome any barriers the skater
is facing that are inhibiting their performance. The service application form
asks for detailed information to establish the exact exercises which will benefit
the skater. This service is also available as a course of four monthly
instalments each accompanied by a telephone consultation with a TSA advisor
to help the skater through their difficulties.

Fitness testing
This service necessitates the skater being visited in their home rink for on and
/ or off ice fitness testing in skate specific areas. The results are then
analysed and the skater is provided with a report indicating their level of
fitness in relation to the general population and highlighting any areas they
could consider improving to enhance their skating performance.
