Cameron Family of Muskoka
I have researched my family genealogy as far as I can. I am now trying to find out where it originated from in
Scotland, so that I can continue the family tree. My Great Great Grandparents Kenneth Cameron and Mary
Murray were both born in Scotland, they married in Toronto Aug 6th 1841 and eventually settled in
Georgina Township. Kenneth Cameron arrived in Upper Canada in 1838, a Colour Sergeant of the 93rd
Sutherland Highlanders. I am hoping that this web site will help me find more information on Kenneth
Cameron and Mary Murray.

Colour Sergeant is a non-commissioned title in the infantry regiments of the British Army, ranking above
Sergeant The rank was introduced into the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars to reward long-serving
sergeants. For this reason, to reach the rank of Colour Sergeant was considered a prestigious attainment,
granted normally to those Sergeants who had displayed courage on the field of battle.
The 93rd, Sutherland Highlanders
The Ninety-Third, Sutherland Highlanders.—The 93rd was ordered to Canada in December of 18, co-incident
upon the rising of 1837, there. January, 1838, the regiment, in two divisions, embarked at Cork, one under
Lieut.-Colonel Duncan MacGregor, and the other under command of Major Arthur. Both divisions were united at
Halifax. During the troubles in Canada the regiment had not an opportunity of meeting the enemy except at
Prescott, at the attack and capture in the Windmill. At this period the regiment was very much divided, but
before the end of the year, 1838, the companies came together at Toronto, where Lieut.- Colonel Spark took
command in succession to Lieut.-Colonel MacGregor. Its stay in Canada extended over ten years. It remained in
Toronto from the beginning of 1838 until the 17th June, 1845, with the exception of one year—May. 1840, to
May, 1841—when it was stationed at Drummondsvillie, near Niagara Falls. While in Toronto in 1842 an order
from the Horse Guards pays a high tribute to its morale, and by implication the reverse of a compliment to that
of the Toronto of those days. It runs: "This line regiment still continues to maintain its character for comparative
sobriety and good order amidst the dissipation with which it appears to be surrounded. and that it is as
remarkable for its splendid appearance in the field, and the correctness of its evolutions, as for the quiet and
orderly habits of its men in their quarters." In May, 1845, the 93rd proceeded to Montreal, where it was joined
by a part of the regiment which had been stationed for several months at Kingston. About a year was spent at
Montreal and nearly three in Quebec, when in 1849 it returned to Scotland, later on to win the undying glories
of the Crimea and India.
From the ranks of these regiments Canada drew not a few citizens who have distinguished themselves in every
line of enterprise, in commerce, finance, the professions and in public life. Men who having the hardy training of
soldiers, and the sterling character of their race, have done incalculable service in laying the foundations of this
young country and in building upon them a superstructure of which their descendants need not feel ashamed.

DONALD CAMERON
It Seems that Kenneth Cameron Sr. had a brother (Donald) that also arrived in Upper Canada. According to
the age of Donald's youngest child (Catherine) they
would have had to emmigrate sometime after 1856, around 20 years or so after Kenneth.

Kenneth Cameron Sr. & Mary Murray
I have completed my family search in Canada, I am now trying to find out where it originated from in
Scotland, so that I can continue the family tree. My great great grandfather was born about 1810 and
arrived here in 1838. He was a sergeant in the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders. In 1838 the 93rd Sutherland
highlanders arrived at Halifax from Cork Ireland, on the HMS Crocodile. They came in response to
William Lyon Mackenzie's rebel cause against the ruling government during the Rebellion of 1837 in
Upper Canada. I know he was here in 1838 (history of Toronto and York County) and his marriage places
him in Toronto on August 6th 1841 (Landmarks of Toronto, historical sketches). The 93rd were stationed
in Toronto 1838 to 1845, with the exception of one year, May 1840 to May 1841.
I have no idea how long after 1841 that he stayed with the regiment. At some point in time he left the
93rd and settled down, eventually in Georgina Township and apparently had 10 children, 8 surviving.I
am hoping that this web site will help me find more information on Kenneth Cameron and Mary Murray
my Great Great Grandparents.

Subject: Re: Sutherland Highlanders
Allan,
The museum does not hold service papers from this period. They are actually held at the National Archives,
Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU. You may have to employ one of the NA researchers to
find the
papers on your behalf.
I did have a look through the appropriate museum's archives and the only mention of Kenneth I could find
was on a simply list from June 1838 which it states his rank as Colour Sergeant and his regimental number
as 457. There is no other information unfortunately.
If you do obtain his records from the NA I would appreciate a note of the details for our archives.
Regards
Rod Mackenzie
