Action: Primary muscles for respiration.

Depression (internal) and elevation

(external) of ribs.

Nerves: Intercostal nerves

Blood Supply: Anterior and posterior Intercostal

arteries

Origin: Xiphoid process, transversus

abdominis, lumbocostal arches and the

lumbar vertebrae.

Action: aids in respiration

Nerves: phrenic and lower intercostal

Blood Supply: pericardiaophrenic artery,

musculophrenic artery, inferior phrenic

arteries

external, rectus, internal and transversus

abdominis

Internal and External Abdominis Rectus Abdominis

Origin:Lumbar fascia, anterior two thirds Origin: pubis

of iliac crest and lateral two thirds of

Action: Flexion of trunk, posterior tilt

of pelvis, lateral flexion,

Action: flexion of trunk, lateral flexion,

compression of abd. contents.

Ipsilateral rotation, posterior pelvis tilt,

Origin:Aponeurosis of posterior and anterior rectus

sheath and conjoint tendon to pubic crest and

pectineal line

Action: Compression of the abd. contents.

Nerves: Intercostal Nerves

Blood Supply: subcostal and posterior intercostal

arteries and the deep circumflex iliac artery.

iliacus, psoas major

(iliopsoas)

Origin: iliac fossa and spine. Insertion at

the lesser trocanter.

Action: flexion of the hip

Nerves: femoral nerve

Blood Supply: medial femoral circumflex

artery, iliolumbar artery

quadratus lumborum

Origin: from the iliolumbar ligament and the iliac

crest. Insertion at the last rib and the lumbar

vertebrae.

Action: flexion of the vertebral column and

depression of the thoracic rib cage.

Nerves: 12th thoracic and 1st - 4th lumbar

nerves.

Blood Supply: lumbar arteries and lumbar

branch of iliolumbar artery.
