ABOUT THE RED SOX FOUNDATION
The official team charity of the Boston Red Sox, the Red Sox Foundation is committed to
harnessing the passion of the team’s fans to improve the lives of at-risk children and wounded
veterans. Founded in 2002 by Principal Owner John Henry, Chairman Tom Werner,
President/CEO Larry Lucchino and their generous partners, the Red Sox Foundation is primarily
focused on our cornerstone programs in the areas of health, education, recreation and social service
programs.
The Red Sox team charity has won numerous
awards for its innovative outreach and programming. In
2009, the Red Sox Foundation won a national award as
the “Best Team Charity in Sports” presented by the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation and Sports Philanthropy
Project. And late last year, the Red Sox won the first-ever
MLB Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence for the
Foundation’s work with Red Sox Scholars Program.
The Red Sox Foundation’s Cornerstone Programs
include: The Jimmy Fund, which supports breakthrough
cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute; Red
Sox RBI and Rookie Leagues youth baseball programs,
which teach life lessons through the sport to over 3,000
inner-city youngsters each year; Red Sox Foundation-
funded children’s programs at The Dimock Center in
Roxbury serving 60,000 low-income families in Boston’s
communities of color; and the Red Sox Scholars program,
which provides college scholarships, mentoring, after-
school programming, summer camp and internships for academically talented but economically
disadvantaged Boston Public School students to help them build a “ladder of success.” The Red
Sox Foundation also developed the New Hampshire
Red Sox Scholars program. Launched in 2010, the
Red Sox Foundation awards $1,000 scholarships to
academically talented New Hampshire public high
school seniors who have shown an exceptional
commitment to community service. Through the
Foundation, the team also reaches out to children who
live in group homes, or what used to be called
orphanages, in each New England state.
In 2009, the Red Sox Foundation launched a major new initiative focused on servicemen
and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with traumatic brain injuries and combat stress –
two signature but often “invisible wounds” of the current war. The new philanthropic partnership
is called “The Red Sox Foundation and MGH Home Base Program.” According to
government studies, as many as 30 percent of OEF/OIF veterans are affected by traumatic brain
injury and/or combat stress.
In 2010, the Red Sox Foundation launched a new
event called THE RUN TO HOME BASE
PRESENTED BY NEW BALANCE, a 9K (5.6 miles)
race with a timed finished in front of the iconic Green
Monster and photo finish of runners crossing home plate at
Fenway Park. This year, the RUN TO HOME BASE is
scheduled on Sunday, May 22nd. For more information
about the run and how you can honor veterans who have
sacrificed on behalf of all of us, please visit
www.runtohomebase.org. Advance registration is required,
so we encourage fans to sign up today! Even if you can’t join the run, you can still help by signing
up as a “virtual runner” – or by making a donation to any of the runners participating including the
Red Sox own Team 9.
Thank you to our generous sponsors, the talented Red Sox players, their wives, coaches, managers,
dedicated front office members and the most loyal fans in baseball--- Red Sox Nation. You have
made the Red Sox Foundation “The Best Team Charity in Sports!”
