work is publishable. This workshop and the techniques taught have
been approved by the Mississippi Arts Commission.

Star. Her most recent publication “Historic Photos of Mississippi” (Turner Publishing Co., Nashville, May 2009) is a bestseller in its
genre for the publisher and has taken her to more than 60 book signing/readings throughout Mississippi.
Writing Fiction
When writing fiction, writers have to think and write in layers: plot, description, dialogue, character, internal conflict,
and external conflict. Branching from each of these are other elements of fiction as well. Therefore, fiction is more than
creating a “storyline.” Fiction is writing about the “people” who drive the story.
This four-week course, Writing Fiction, teaches that characters are the most memorable aspect of fiction, and allows
students to see how the “big story” develops from a character’s need and desire; to read other fiction; to learn how
characters are used in driving plot; to learn and practice techniques for analyzing real people when crafting story characters;
to practice creating multi-dimensional characters in writing exercises; to apply various ways in revealing characters on the
page; to create several diverse characters for one storyline; and to complete a draft of a story.
Tuesdays, Oct. 5 – 26, 2010 • 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. • Cost: $50
