Friendly Beginnings for New Writers

This workshop is for the new writer with a passion for creative

writing. Included in the workshop are many tips, technological

resources, hard print resources, writing prompts, and exercises.

Also, a chronicle of “how-to’s” including basic script writing, query

letters to prospective publishers, humor, characterization, plots,

journal, memoirs, writing family histories, tools for research, plus

the encouragement needed to accomplish the status of a creative

writer. The workshop seeks the timid heart….the writer who has

something to say through the written word but has never felt their

work is publishable. This workshop and the techniques taught have

been approved by the Mississippi Arts Commission.

Mondays, Sept. 13 – Oct. 4 • Time: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. • Cost: $50

About the Instructor: Anne B. McKee

Anne B. McKee is a literary and performing artist and a teaching artist. She is listed in both categories on the Mississippi Artist Roster

sponsored by Mississippi Arts Commission. McKee contributes to the arts community in her roles as a storyteller, humorist, public

speaker, author, journalist, creator of historic literary events and Mississippi heritage projects. In addition, she serves as a teacher for

creative writing workshops, and guest playwright for several community theaters. She is one of three founders of Mississippi Writers

Guild and one of two founders of Tall Tales & Recollections, Mississippi Storytellers. She writes a weekly editorial for The Meridian

Star. Her most recent publication “Historic Photos of Mississippi” (Turner Publishing Co., Nashville, May 2009) is a bestseller in its

genre for the publisher and has taken her to more than 60 book signing/readings throughout Mississippi.

Writing Fiction

When writing fiction, writers have to think and write in layers: plot, description, dialogue, character, internal conflict,

and external conflict. Branching from each of these are other elements of fiction as well. Therefore, fiction is more than

creating a “storyline.” Fiction is writing about the “people” who drive the story.

This four-week course, Writing Fiction, teaches that characters are the most memorable aspect of fiction, and allows

students to see how the “big story” develops from a character’s need and desire; to read other fiction; to learn how

characters are used in driving plot; to learn and practice techniques for analyzing real people when crafting story characters;

to practice creating multi-dimensional characters in writing exercises; to apply various ways in revealing characters on the

page; to create several diverse characters for one storyline; and to complete a draft of a story.

Tuesdays, Oct. 5 – 26, 2010 • 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. • Cost: $50

About the Instructor: Richelle Putnam

Richelle Putnam is listed on Mississippi Arts Commission’s Performing and Teaching Artist Roster and the Mississippi Humanities

Council’s Speaker Board. Her work has been published in adult and children’s literature, including The Copperfield Review,

Flashquake, Cup of Comfort inspirational books, Common Ties, The Institute of Children’s Literature, Boy’s Quest, Appleseeds,

Hopschotch magazine, Recovering the Self: Volume II, Brick Street Winners Anthology for 2007, 2008, and 2009. As a writing

instructor, she received formal education from The Open College for the Arts, New York’s Gotham Writers Fiction Certificate
