No. 171 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, On February 9, 2001, Mary Edna Harkey marks 50 years of outstanding service to the State Bank of DeKalb, and she has earned the respect of all who know her; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Harkey became secretary to the president of the State Bank of DeKalb on February 9, 1951, embarking on a career that includes positions as assistant cashier, cashier, and vice president and secretary to the chairman of the board, and she currently serves as vice president and secretary to the board of directors; and WHEREAS, Before beginning her association with the State Bank of DeKalb, this notable Texan graduated from Draughon's Business College in Dallas and was employed with Koon-McNatt Storage and Transfer, Southwestern Transportation Company, South Dallas Bank & Trust, and Southwestern Telephone Company and General Telephone Company; she later completed various courses with the American Institute of Banking in addition to public relations and sales classes through The University of Texas at Austin; and WHEREAS, Her enthusiasm, upbeat attitude, and notable customer service are known throughout her community, and Mrs. Harkey takes to heart mottoes such as, "You can never do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late," and "From the day you are born 'til you ride in the hearse, there is nothing so bad, that it couldn't be worse!"; on her birthday this year, her colleagues presented her with a cake decorated with the likeness of the Energizer Bunny in tribute to her ability to "keep on going"; and WHEREAS, Deeply respected for her leadership ability, she shares her time and talents with many worthy local and national organizations and has served in myriad offices; she has served as chairman of the board of New Boston General Hospital; she is a founding member of the National Association of Bank Women and participates with the DeKalb Chapter of the American Business Women's Association and the Texarkana Chapter of the American Institute of Banking; she served on the Texas Small Business Advisory Council; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Harkey's diverse volunteer activities include serving as financial secretary of the DeKalb Community Chest for 40 years, as secretary of the Kiwanis Club, and as a member of Keep DeKalb Beautiful; this woman of faith is an active congregant of First Baptist Church and supports additional civic endeavors too numerous to mention; and WHEREAS, Listed in several editions of Who's Who of American Women, she is the recipient of a Community Service Award presented by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and she was named Member of the Year by the East Texas Chapter of Bank Women; and WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mary Edna Harkey has aspired to the highest level of professionalism and achievement, and her significant efforts in behalf of her fellow citizens are truly exemplary; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas Legislature hereby commend Mary Edna Harkey for her distinguished career at the State Bank of DeKalb and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Harkey as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
