 Message from Rabbi Randi Musnitsky
The new Jewish year 5771, corresponding to the secular year 2010-2011,
marks the 40th Anniversary celebration of our congregation. Throughout these
past 40 years Temple Har Shalom has made major contributions to the perpetuation
of Jewish Life in Warren and its surrounding towns. Our past accomplishments
represent the building blocks upon which we will erect a future dedicated to
the religious, spiritual and educational needs of our congregational family.
Our Torah teaches that at forty, one gains “understanding.” This teaching
is reminiscent of the forty years the Israelites wandered through the desert in
pursuit of reaching the promised land. At the culmination of their journey,
the real work was to begin in building a nation that would sustain future
generations of Jewish life. The journey was actually the prelude to gaining the
understanding and wisdom that each and every member of the Jewish people is responsible for the perpetuation of our
faith and community. Likewise, for our congregation, our 40th year marks our maturation and calls upon us to make
communal and personal commitments to sustaining the sacred work of our founders and wanderers who came before us.
Each year we strive as a lay and professional
team to elevate ourselves to higher levels of
commitment, practice and study. We focus our
attention on our worship experience, our holiday
observances, our Religious School, our family and
adult education programs, our Mt. Top School for
Young Children. We nurture our Youth from Pre-
school through High School, reinforced with Youth
Group activities and travel experiences. We offer
to every generation friendship, study, and social
 interaction and mitzvot opportunities.
Spread out throughout the entire year will
be special events in celebration of our 40th
Anniversary. We await anxiously your presence
and participation throughout this most significant
time in our history. For as a member of Temple
Har Shalom, you have joined the company of Jews
throughout the ages who took seriously the divine
commandment spoken to our ancestors as they
departed Egypt: “Let them build Me a sanctuary
so that I may dwell among them.”
On behalf of our entire staff, I wish you and
your loved ones a Mazel Tov and a Shana Tova,
heartfelt congratulations on sharing together in
 this milestone new year!
 Rabbi Randi Musnitsky, D. Min.

Presidential Point
Introducing Our New Temple President – Ed Adler
As this Shofar is my first opportunity to communicate with you, my
temple family, I thought I’d introduce myself.
Our family has been members of Temple Har Shalom for about fifteen
years. We moved to Watchung in 1993. Austen was three and Raigne had
yet to arrive. Rachel and I joined the Mountain Jewish Community Center
(soon to become Temple Har Shalom) and began attending High Holy Day
Services at The Somerset Votech High School. We watched our synagogue
transform from an old farm house and garage to the present modern
structure. Our founding families did an admirable job. I am in awe of their
accomplishments. There are still improvements we can make to the facility
including handicap accessibility and beautifying our sanctuary. We hope to
address these items in the coming year.
During my first decade as a member of Har Shalom I treated the synagogue
like a national park. I watched things go on around me but contributed very
little. We paid our dues, contributed a small amount for the Yom Kippur appeal and showed up for religious school
parking lot duty. In the spirit of honesty I must confess there were a few times when we failed to show up in the
parking lot. It took time but I finally realized that I had to contribute something to the Jewish community if I wanted
to consider myself part of it. Slowly, I immersed myself in temple life. I joined a committee, attended meetings and
spoke my mind. We came to Friday night services every few weeks. We made a larger financial commitment to the
annual appeal and joined The Rings of Support. This has been a slow, steady yet remarkably easy course for our family.
The Grand Canyon will do fine with or without my involvement. Certainly taking only photographs and leaving only
footprints is the best strategy to preserve our national parks. Har Shalom, however, requires our involvement (please see
the Volunteer Sign-Up on page 5). Show
up and speak your mind, join a committee
and give all you can to our Annual Appeal.
Our 40th Anniversary presents many
opportunities for involvement. Please
see the article on page 6. (Thank you to
Resa and Neal Drasin for volunteering to
lead our efforts). If you miss a parking lot
assignment, we will understand and you
too might be president one day.
I look forward to seeing you in the halls
of Temple Har Shalom. Here’s wishing your
family a healthy and happy New Year.
Ed Adler, President

Sanctuary Addition
Hopefully you noticed the baby grand piano now
located in the sanctuary. We donated the piano to
Temple Har Shalom in loving memory of Neal’s parents,
Saul and Florence Drasin, who both passed away in May
2008. Saul’s first career was as a professional piano
player. He traveled the east coast in the 1940s and 50s
performing with the popular entertainers of the time.
His stage name was Sy Drake.
The baby grand piano was constructed in the late
1940s and graced Saul and Florence’s living room,
where he enjoyed playing it for more than 50 years.
Florence met Saul when her family was vacationing in
Miami Beach and he was performing at the Grossinger-
Pancoast Hotel. They married the following year and
honeymooned at Grossinger’s in the Catskills. In
1957, Saul changed careers and became a real estate
developer, but continued to play piano. He was very
active in his synagogue, Congregation B’nai Israel in
Millburn, and a constant presence at morning minyan
services every day. We fondly recall watching him play
as the accompanist for his synagogue’s shows, including
Fiddler on the Roof. Library Committee

A Life-Changing Trip
                              by Rabbi Marcus Burstein
In the middle of June, I used my last days of vacation for the fiscal year to go
on a rabbinic mission with American Jewish World Service (AJWS). I was selected
to be a part of a group of 12 rabbis from throughout the United States -- we were
a group of Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative and Orthodox rabbis, and it
was AJWS’s first interdenominational rabbinic group they sent overseas.
The trip was a learning and mitzvah mission. We flew to Cancun, Mexico,
and then drove almost four hours to reach the village we would live in for the
next week – Muchucuxcah. Muchucuxcah has about 450 people and is relatively
isolated from other areas. (For example, the closest health clinic is 45 minutes away.) With one store, a few churches,
and two schools serving the entire town, it would be easy to miss the miracles that were going on there!
Our group stayed in a type of camp, sleeping on hammocks in thatched-roof huts called ‘palapas.’ We were
lucky to have electricity in the camp, and there were two outdoor (cold water only) showers for us to use. The main
palapa had a refrigerator and an oven – the only oven in the town.
The residents of Muchucuxcah primarily subsist on the food that they grow and the animals that they raise,
although some have small businesses. AJWS partnered with a local organization called El Hombre Sobre la Tierra (HST)
or ‘Human Beings on the Earth.’ This organization works with Mayan communities in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula to
transform their assets into higher-income producing products and to help convert traditional skills into local income-
generation opportunities. HST formed a cooperative of 54 people from the village, and the lives of these families
have been totally transformed.
I will only share one example here, because I plan to speak more about this on Yom Kippur at Temple Har Shalom.
Magdalena has two daughters who are now seven and ten. For many years as they were growing up, her daughters
became sick frequently, primarily as a result of malnutrition and their living conditions. Magdalena and her husband
did not have a way to provide for their family. (In fact, almost all of the men leave the village at some point or another
to seek employment in the hotel industry in Cancun.) With the help of HST, Magdalena learned how to farm fruits and
vegetables, raise chickens, and goats, and even have enough left over from their own needs to sell food to the other
villagers. She now has 70 different types of plants that provide food for their family, and a flock of goats and chickens.
Her daughters are healthy and are able to attend school
Come Home To The Chelsea – one of the few wishes that Magdalena has for them,
since she was not able to have an education past second
grade. Additionally, we easily felt the pride and sense of
accomplishment from her efforts, and Magdalena’s own
sense of self-worth. With an investment of merely $300,

Religious School News
Due to the generosity of many congregants
seeking to give something back in appreciation of
the positive affect the Religious School has had upon
the lives of their children, the Religious School has
been able to acquire many ‘luxurious necessities’.
This oxymoron aptly applies to that which goes
beyond the scope of educational bare bones (books
and supplies). It includes the funding of tangible
items and the sponsorship of programs. These
wonderful donations have helped enrich our school life through direct and indirect interaction with our children. In the
current economic climate, it is our great challenge to balance the budget and simultaneously maintain the excellence
in programming that our THS students and families have become accustom. This year, we are looking to those of
you who might be able to financially donate, to offer assistance that will help offer programs and/or offset expenses.
There are two options to support and donate to the Religious School:
1. Direct Donation to the THS Education Fund:
Several years ago, the Education Fund was established for the purpose of obtaining items that reach beyond our
regular operating budget. This fund accumulates donations on a continual basis and is tapped when needed.
This includes tangible items or additional school programming (which can be paid from this fund in its entirety or
supplemented). People donate specified amounts to The Education Fund (anywhere from $5.00 to increments of
$18.00), for which all donors are acknowledged and thanked for their generosity. Monies from the Education Fund
have been used to purchase a laminating machine, Ellison letter making machine (for bulletin board design), and
DVD players. Programs and program supplementation have included an Israeli artist for hands-on art workshops,
Israeli dance instruction, theater presentations, busses for class trips, and subsidies for the high school trip to
Washington, DC. The donation process is easy! Simply click on the Religious School section of the Temple website
at www.templeharshalom.org or call Ellen Ozur-Brown at 732-302-0761. Please consider donating to this Fund
when marking any life cycle event or as a way to honor or thank someone.
2. Sponsorship (or Co-sponsorship with Friends)
    of a Specific Special Program:
A full list of available grade level programs
and their costs are listed for those who are
    contemplating sponsorship. Simply click on:
    http://www.templeharshalom.org/hst/rsdonate/.
Sponsoring families will be acknowledged on our
new Wall of Recognition located in the school
hallway. It is with great appreciation that I recognize
those families who will be sponsoring the following
programs for the 2010/2011 school year:
    • Torah Tots program for 3 – 5 year olds:
        Dicks, Phillips and Shiffman families.
    • Grade 1 Shema Pajama Party:
        Wang family.
    • Kindergarten Israeli dancing:
        Rob & Sheri Cohen family.
    • High School dinner nights:
Senior graduating class and the Eckenthal family.
Our school continues to be full and active. Your
support, big or small, helps our school do a better job
as we aim to inspire and offer the best for our children.
Your support helps make a good thing even better
– Todah rabah!
Wishing you and your family a Sweet & Happy New Year,
Sharon R. Friedman, Director of Education

Tales from the Mountain Top
Summer brought busy days at Mountain Top as
our camp had fun with Reading Rainbow. Director
Kathy Sang, along with Camp Assistant Sue Oliva,
did a wonderful job planning our fun-filled summer
program based on favorite books. Once again, we
look forward to a smooth transition to the school year,
due to the number of children who participated in our
summer camp. As in the past, this was a perfect way
for the children to get adjusted to our environment
in a comfortable setting.
Mountain Top will officially launch the 2010/11 year on Monday, September 13th with our Meet the Teacher
and New Parent Orientation.
We will be working hard at further developing our social action and tzedakah programs along with our Yellow
teacher, Marcy Byer. Our co-chairs, Danielle Abrutyn and Danielle Lader, are working on many wonderful programs.
In addition, Heather Lusardi will once again be in charge of our Challah delivery for Shabbat. As in the past, the
Mountain Top parents spend a great deal of time in our school. Without this commitment we could never run many of
our popular programs. Danielle and Danielle will oversee
all of the class parents. This is no easy task when you
have seven classes, each with at least two class parents! Mountain Top Parent Committee
With fall in full swing, our Early Childhood Program As new co-chairwomen of the Mountain Top

Carnival is a tremendous undertaking and could never
happen without the hard work of our committee. This
year, Mountain Top is already dedicating endless hours
to plan this wonderful event.
As you can see, the energy level and dedication
to our school continues to make Mountain Top one
of the most wonderful places for our families as well
as our great staff to spend a great deal of time. From
our specials: Art, Music, Creative Movement, Library,
Computers. to our everyday classroom activities, we are
so excited about our new school year.

Chai and Temple Tributes
There are many ways to mark the special occasions or lifecycle events of friends and family members. Temple Har
Shalom has created tribute cards that can appropriately send a message that will commemorate a wedding, birth,
Bar/Bat Mitzvah, convey thoughts of sympathy, or special wishes or congratulations on a special day or event. The
next time you consider purchasing a commercial greeting card, won’t you consider sending a Temple Har Shalom
tribute card instead? An acknowledgement card will be sent promptly to the recipient of your donation and your
thoughtful gift will be listed in The Shofar.
Chai Tribute donations support the functions of the Caring Committee as they respond to the needs of our
congregants, including presenting a gift to families of newborns, sending care packages to college students, and
attending to the needs of bereaved families. The minimum donation is Chai, $18. General tribute donations help
support our Temple’s general funds and the minimum donation is $7.50. Donations may be sent to the Temple office
or billed to your Temple account. Please contact Office Manager Elissa Degani in the Temple Office at (732) 356-
8777 ext 106 or go to www.templeharshalom.org and click on donations.

to Benefit The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Cycling enthusiasts and volunteers are being called upon to make a difference in the fight against cancer, during
the sixth-annual Century for the Cure bicycle ride to benefit research at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ).
CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Registration is now open for the one-day event, which takes place this year on September 11th at Camp Riverbend
in Warren Township. Cyclists can choose the 100-mile or 40-mile route, as they pedal through the scenic back roads
of central New Jersey. New this year is the option to register as a ‘virtual rider.’ Virtual riders can collect donations and
show their support without physically taking part in the ride. Participants, virtual riders and volunteers can register
online at www.centuryforthecure.com.
      Century for the
Cure grew out of a
passion for cycling held
by Warren Township
resident and Temple Har
Shalom member Scott
Glickman, who was
treated at CINJ for stage
f o u r non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma more than
a decade ago. As a way
of ‘giving back’ to CINJ,
G l i c k m a n g a t h e re d
together a few friends
and began the annual
event in 2005. That
handful of friends has grown into more than 100 riders over the past few years, and event organizers are confident
that number will continue to grow. Since the ride’s inception, more than $425,000 has been raised for cutting-edge
research at CINJ.
“Whether one is taking part in the ride itself, supporting a rider online, or even helping out at the finish line,
Century for the Cure provides numerous opportunities to make a significant impact in the fight against cancer,”
Glickman stated. “Monies raised over the past five years have supported ground-breaking research at CINJ -- projects
which have now advanced to life-saving therapies, thanks to the generous support of all of those who take part.”
In particular, a portion of the funds raised will
