WHAT IS THE JOURNAL OF LAW, ECONOMICS & POLICY?
THE JOURNAL OF LAW, ECONOMICS & POLICY is one of four law journals at George Mason
University School of Law. JLEP was founded in 2004 and represents a unique undertaking: it
was the first peer-reviewed journal at GMUSL and is the first student-run journal of law and
economics in legal academia. It serves as an outlet for the experience and interests of George
Mason law students, including our Levy Fellows, who hold a PhD in Economics and are
working towards JDs. Most importantly, it is structured as a cooperative journal. Although
student-edited, JLEP is peer-reviewed, ensuring that the published articles are of the highest
quality.
One issue each year will be devoted to a specialized Symposium topic bearing on
important questions of legal and economic policy. The second annual issue will be a peer-
reviewed compendium of articles submitted by individual authors. The focus will be on the
legal side of law and economics, an approach that we hope will de-emphasize technical
mathematics, while providing readers with greater access to economic insights about legal and
policy issues.
While in the past JLEP has published two issues each year, the Journal published four
issues last year with Volume 7 and plans to continue this trend in the 2011-2012 school year.
The first two issues will be general issues with student casenotes from the previous Candidate
Member class, chosen by the previous Board of Editors; the third issue will be a topical issue;
and the fourth issue will be based on our 2011 Fall Symposium.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Founded with an entrepreneurial spirit, JLEP sustains this ethos by looking at an
applicant for attributes they can contribute to the journal. Accordingly, JLEP’s application
considers additional materials that will build a more comprehensive representation of what an
applicant can offer, and also gauge an applicant’s interest in law and economics.
The JLEP Application includes:
1) Mandatory Participation in the Write-On Competition;
2) Resume; and
3) Optional Personal Statement or Short Answer Responses.
CANDIDATE MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidate Members play an integral role in JLEP’s publications process and will work
with committee editors to complete assignments in their respective committees: Articles,
Editorial, Managing, Publications, Research, and Symposium.
All Candidate Members are required to author an original scholarly article of
publishable quality during the fall semester.
