of Ophthalmology
The Chair of Ophthalmology, reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, is responsible for the
overall management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resources allocation and program development
and implementation for the department. In addition to an internationally recognized research program, the
department operates from a complex of facilities that consists of the Donald P. and Darlene V. Shiley Eye
Center, the Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children’s Eye Center, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Retina Center
University of California
and the Hamilton Glaucoma Center. The Chair provides leadership and direction in meeting the research,
educational, and professional missions of the department with interface with UCSD University Hospitals –
Hillcrest and Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, the John and Rebecca Moores Cancer Center, the Department of
Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center, and the Rady Children’s Hospital.
Qualifications include a doctoral degree and a strong track record in clinical and research ophthalmology.
Applicants must be board certified in Ophthalmology. Other qualifications are experience in education and
research, and significant academic experience and accomplishment, including teaching, research, public
service, leadership and contributions to diversity. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications
and experience and based on UC pay scales.
