EWGA Phoenix Metro – How to establish your handicap by total score!
What is a handicap? Your handicap index is a way for you to measure how your game is going, good or
not as good. If you are working on improving your game this number will help you show growth.
Why establish a handicap? A handicap index will allow you to compete against golfers of differing
abilities. The handicap index is what makes golf unique; no other sport has this equalizing factor. Once
you establish your handicap you may participate in flighted events. The EWGA has one of the largest
amateur national tournaments for golfers of all abilities! Five flights make this tournament fun for all
golfers. Follow these easy steps to establishing your handicap now!

Now, let’s talk about the Adjusted Gross Score!
5
EWGA Phoenix Metro – How to establish your handicap by total score!
The actual number of strokes you recorded is your gross score. There are controls in golf to help the
golfer when the “BLOW UP” hole occurs! This is done with the Equitable Stroke Control chart. When
you use the ESC chart you will be calculating your Adjusted Gross Score. (Important! You should keep
track of your actual score during play and only use ESC AFTER play for handicap purposes.)
Depending on your handicap range your
maximum stroke allowance for any hole is as
follows:
Before you enter your score, be sure that there
are no holes above this maximum. If there is
you need to change that number to your ESC
max. Example, if your handicap is 22 and you
took a 10 on a par 5, you need to ESC that hole
to an 8. Once you have checked each hole score
for ESC, you can re-total for your Adjusted Gross
Score.
*** Note: if you do not have an established handicap you can use the 40 or more ESC range. The max
score on any hole would then be 10 with a max 18-hole score of 180 for your handicap. ***
Now that you have your
Adjusted Gross Score you
can enter the score and
click on the post score
button!

You can obtain a 9-hole handicap by selecting nine holes for your score, either front 9 or back 9. Be sure
to use the 9-hole ESC chart.
Once you enter a few scores (like 3)
you will be issued a “trend” handicap.
This is not official and cannot be used
as an index, but will give you some
idea of how you are playing. Once you
post 5 scores, after the next revision
date you will have an official handicap
index! (Note: it takes 10 nine-hole
scores to establish an index.)
(For handicap accuracy you need to
post all of your scores. Your index will
be based on the lowest 10 scores out
of the last 20 posted.)
