Charity in Full Swing at State Department of General Services

The uncertainties of the economic future have not prevented state employees from opening up their hearts and

wallets this year to those less fortunate. State workers from the Department of General Services (DGS) will

continue to give in the coming weeks as they collect gifts for the needy and food for the hungry this holiday

season.

The morning of Thursday, December 18, DGS employees will be stationed in front of their well-known

Ziggurat building to accept food donations for Food-Link, which distributes the food to more than 80

Sacramento programs. Participants will not even need to leave their cars as DGS Director Will Bush and

employees will gladly accept donations in a makeshift drive-thru. That afternoon, the employees will join

Santa in delivering gifts to approximately 100 children in need from Elkhorn Village, Riverbank and Alice

Norman elementary schools in West Sacramento.

"The generosity displayed by the employees at DGS during these rough economic times is amazing," said Will

Bush, director of DGS. "It really demonstrates that people genuinely care about those hurting in these tough

times."

Last week DGS staff donated additional gifts to 263 children and 71 seniors as part of Sacramento County's

annual "Gifts From The Heart" campaign.

The department's food drive will run until January 9 with a goal to collect 15,000 pounds of food, exceeding

the 13,400 pounds of food donated last year.

This past fall, DGS employees contributed $3,821 toward California State Employees Charitable Campaign

through a series of events.

"I couldn't ask for better people to work with," said Bush. "They inspire me to do more."
