Angela Nelson, Marshall County Extension Education

Director

Angie Nelson brings enthusiasm and creative spirit to

Extension programming and services to assist county

residents. She has developed hands-on learning in the

Healthy Meals in a Hurry program. She is actively working

on a small farm business incubator for new Latino and Anglo

farmers and the Marshall County staff is learning language

skills necessary to help Spanish speaking residents. Her

ideas, strong partnerships and innovative programs shape

the future for Marshall County Extension.





Steve Olsen, Cass County Extension Education Director

Steve Olsen carries out ISU Extension’s mission in Cass

County by offering balanced programming relevant to

the needs of citizens. He cooperates with Extension

professionals at the state and area levels to bring their

expertise to bear on community needs and partners with

individuals, organizations and communities to present

research-based information that people can use as

solutions to problems. He supports entrepreneurial efforts to

strengthen the local economy.

caring person who will help anyone. By doing so, she has

her thoughts for discussion, assisting with other office duties

as needed, and serving as a “sounding board” for ideas.

She maintains a strong presence with the community clubs,

school enrichment activities, and workshop events.





Mary K. Wilkins, Story County Youth Coordinator

Mary Wilkins provides vibrant, enthusiastic leadership

for the Story County 4-H Program. Mary established

the collaborations necessary to form a new urban 4-H

Horticulture Club called Roots and Shoots by courting the

Story County Master Gardeners Association and the Ames

Garden Club. Both organizations are providing significant

financial support and leadership in working with the new 4-H

Club. Mary also was instrumental in helping Story County

Extension meet the 3 percent growth target in 2008.

John Lawrence, Extension Economist

John Lawrence is recognized both locally and nationally as a

leading expert on the U.S. livestock industry. He has carried

out research projects and articulated the results to producers

as well as policy makers and industry leaders. He has

achieved high credibility as a forecaster of livestock market

conditions, and as an unbiased interpreter of the changing

structure of the livestock industry in Iowa.





Gene Mohling, Johnson and Washington County

Extension Education Director

Gene Mohling is an exceptional Extension worker. His

enthusiasm, innovation, and hard work in developing

and delivering programs have generated a new vision

for Extension. Gene has worked diligently at establishing

the important networks, securing the resources, and

building relationships necessary to lead Extension

in new directions. He has anticipated significant new

opportunities and developed support to implement program

organizational changes necessary to achieve success. His

accomplishments and leadership exemplify Extension and

enhance local presence.

Kathy Jolly Vance, Louisa County Extension Education

Director

In June when it appeared that Louisa County would

experience record flooding, Kathy Vance began to issue

daily updates on water levels and area conditions. By late

June Kathy arranged for a makeshift office in the shelter

in Wapello to disseminate recovery information. She was

also appointed by the Louisa County Supervisors as the

Public Information Officer for the Flood Recovery Effort and

handled the media through the crisis period.





Teresa Wiemerslage, Allamakee County Extension

Director

Teresa Wiemerslage’s communication skills elevate her

above her peers. She excels at translating complex subject

matter into everyday language people can understand. Her

ease with using technology has been a key factor in the

success of the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative

and the related Northeast Iowa Food and Farm Coalition.

Teresa’s creation of monthly webcasts has united the county

teams and regional work groups by creating common

language and focus.

Annie’s Project has helped more than 1,000 Iowa farm

women learn new skills in risk management, financial

management, commodity marketing, farm transition

planning, and computer analysis. Moreover, participants

have established a network with other female farm operators

and agribusiness practitioners to help achieve their goals

for their farming operations and families. Annie’s Project has

grown to include programs delivered in 17 other states.

The Community Assessment Model (CAM) was developed

at Iowa State University and has been used since December

2006 to assist and educate swine producers in the proper

siting of new facilities. CAM objectively helps identify the

most ideal locations for swine barns relative to downwind

residences, fostering strong community relations and

lessening potential odor nuisance situations. Iowa agriculture

commodity groups hail CAM as a successful and proactive

approach to swine farm siting.

A Place of Your Own is an online course developed

by Iowa State University Extension. The course helps

prospective homebuyers learn about home buying and the

homeownership process, and provides information and tools

for people to be responsible homeowners. Applicants should

be successful in selecting a home they can afford and in

making house payments. The course is designed for lower

income or first-time homebuyers seeking homes in smaller

communities or rural areas.

support materials, and staff resources for promoting and

delivering local conversations were a combined effort

of content specialists and the communications unit. ISU

Extension staff were able to provide Iowans with facts and

facilitate local discussions surrounding the economic, social

and environmental ramifications of the bioeconomy because

of the complete package of professional communication

tools produced by this project team. Iowans now can make

informed decisions – of global significance.

The Hawkeye Farm Show has been a staple of agricultural

education and product promotion in Northeast Iowa for

nearly 20 years. ISU Extension has provided the major

educational component the last 12 years, involving more

than 50 different staff members. Booth displays and live

programs involving campus and field staff have made the

Hawkeye Farm Show a better experience for farmers and

agribusiness persons. Plans are to continue Extension’s

presence for years to come.

Iowa marketing workshops held in April 2008 gave nearly

90 Extension professional and county staff the latest

tools for adding the “Wow” factor to brand recognition,

business communications, office image, and interpersonal

relationships.

The Corn and Soybean Initiative partners with

agribusinesses and media to provide science-based crop

production information to corn and soybean growers to

increase their productivity and global competitiveness while

conserving the environment. Producers and agribusinesses

determine research needs and conduct research. ISU faculty

and staff provide research design and data analysis and

Dean Adkins, Agriculture Program Director, KMA Radio,

KMA radio broadcaster Dean Adkins is on a first name

basis with the Extension staff in southwest Iowa. Extension

staff can call at any time for Dean to interview them about

a program and visa-versa, Dean does the same with

southwest Iowa Extension staff. Adkins is the agriculture

program director at regional radio station, KMA in

Shenandoah. Everyone in southwest Iowa knows Dean

because he schedules a day to broadcast live at each of the

county fairs in southwest Iowa. Dean also is the keeper of

the agriculture calendar at KMA.

Jon and Marcia Kenzenbaw, founders and owners of

Kinze Manufacturing, Williamsburg, Iowa

Jon and Marcia Kinzenbaw, are lifelong supporters of Iowa

County Extension, the Iowa County 4-H program, Iowa

County Fair, and Iowa State University. Each year, they

sponsor all the 4-H communication event awards, numerous

livestock trophies, and support the 4-H livestock sale.

Jon and Marcia created their own Kinze award for small

engine, tractor, and welding projects at the Iowa County

Fair. As part of the Kinze award, 4-H and FFA members with

Jon is a lifetime member of the Southeast Iowa

Research Association and supports the research farm in

Crawfordsville. He is also a member of the Iowa County

Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa County Corn Growers,

and a previous member of the Iowa County Pork Producers

prior to their disbanding.

Each year, Jon and Marcia donate a total of six $1,000

scholarships to help graduates pursue higher education. Two

scholarships are awarded at each of three school districts in

Iowa County.

Tom and Helen Pollock, Malvern

Tom and Helen Pollock have been partners with Extension

for more than three decades. Whether it is through the 4-H

program, education or agriculture, they positively impact

life in Iowa. They are dedicated to helping others, and often

accomplish this through their partnership with Extension.

Tom has been a 4-H leader for 25 years, touching and

enhancing the lives of hundreds of youth. He is always

willing to go the extra mile to help others, volunteering to

lead workshops on topics such as Food Safety and Quality
