The day went by really quickly and before you knew it, it was time to go home. Cardinal came in 3rd place for funds raised which was $10,493 out of $75,000 all together. The prizes were really good and everyone who bowled got goodies to take home which was great!! As for every new immigrant it was a shocking experience. One month later, on April 21 I knocked on the door of Cardinal and a very nice lady interviewed me. I don’t know how because I did not know English. Her intuition told her that I could learn the work and she was not wrong in her assumption. Her name is Linda O., and she retired a few years ago. Despite the difficulty to adjust to the new system, I was very lucky to find a friendly group of co-workers from different parts of the world. However, a group of Portuguese employees and Zelia, the supervisor, explained the job to me in very slow Portuguese, which later has become almost like my second language, even ahead of English. During my first months I met a very polite young man in his early twenties. Sometimes he used to help us in the burger room or later on in the rib room. Later on someone told me that his name was Brent and he was the son of the President, who in those days was learning the business. One day I got lost in the back room and I found a studio full of pictures taken by someone who likes old houses, boats, beaches and sea waves. I was admiring those pictures until a voice said to me “how can I help you Margarita?” I was very surprised he knew my name and almost ran back to the room. He was Ralph Cator. Three years later he was the man that took my photo to celebrate my 5th year at Cardinal. It’s amazing how time has passed by. During those first years, I met a lot of people who worked for Cardinal on a part-time basis. They were mostly high school students, such as George D. (who is now a sales representative). One day in 1996 when the song “The Macarena” was playing on the radio day and night, Carlos was humming the tune and minutes later I was singing and almost dancing to it. That day I realized that we were almost like a family; until Zelia came to stop us and put things back in order with a very serious face; but I saw the smile in her eyes. That day everybody was so happy celebrating! We enjoyed our work and at the same time we completed the day’s production. In gratitude to those people who were very patient with me in my first months I always try very hard to train new employees in the same way. 19 years have passed and I have started to believe that Cardinal could be my first and last job in Canada. I think the time to leave is getting very close. I love my work and my friends therefore the idea of retirement is not on my agenda, but the idea of going home to my family is on my mind more frequently. n Margarita Cardinal - The Birdhouse Newsletter - May 2008 6 Teamwork and the Cardinal Vision Vision Cardinal will establish a national presence as Canada’s leading premium burger and sealed environment cooked protein manufacturer. 1+1=3 This section of the Birdhouse is and potential room for many mistakes. we can’t deal with what seems to be typically dedicated to teamwork and Another example is the incredible insurmountable tasks. the Cardinal vision. Since this occurs only when the Moon is on the far side of the Earth from the Sun, a lunar eclipse only occurs when there is a full moon. Unlike a solar eclipse, an eclipse of the Moon can be observed from nearly an entire hemisphere. For this reason it is much more common to observe a lunar eclipse from a given location. A lunar eclipse also lasts longer, taking several hours to complete, with totality itself usually averaging anywhere from about 30 minutes to over an hour. There are three types of lunar eclipses: penumbral, when the Moon crosses only the Earth’s penumbra; partial, when the Moon crosses partially into the Earth’s umbra; and total, when the Moon circles entirely within the Earth’s umbra. Total lunar eclipses pass through all three phases. Even during a total lunar eclipse, however, the Moon is not completely dark. Sunlight refracted through the Earth’s s Photo take on February 20, 2008 atmosphere intersects the umbra and provides a faint illumination. Much as in a Mississauga, Ontario by Anna K sunset, the atmosphere tends to scatter light with shorter wavelengths, so the illumination of the Moon by refracted light has a red hue. n Source of information: www.wikipedia.com Cardinal - The Birdhouse Newsletter - May 2008 8 Kids Help Phone Customer’s Corner Mike and Lynn were top bidders and My husband & I went to Costco a took home the Tower of Toys in support couple of weeks ago shopping for of Kids Help Phone.
