The Alberta gov't contracts with Alberta Blue Cross to provide 3 publicly funded health
plans. One is for those under 65 w/o group coverage (premium), another is coverage for
seniors over the age of 65 (no premium) with the third palliative drug coverage.
Eligibility for senior coverage applies when anyone in the family is over 65 and the entire
family is covered. Eligible participants for all 3 health plans pay a 30% copay to a
maximum of $25 per Rx. There is a $25,000 maximum annual benefit for drug and
Drugs certain Extended Health benefits. For those eligible for the palliative care plan, eligible
drugs are covered at 100% after $1000 paid in eligible expenses. Coverage includes
prescription drugs listed in the Alberta Health & Wellness Drug Benefit list with some
drugs only eligible per specific clinical criteria.
Lab & Diagnostic Tests In-patient only.
Standard ward no charge. Daily room charge for Semi-private is $24 and $46 for
No coverage for ground or air ambulance. Regional health authorities cover the cost of
Ambulance hospital to hospital transfers. Coverage for ambulance services for seniors through a
plan administered by Alberta Blue Cross.
One exam per year for ages 18 and under and 65 and over. Coverage for diagnosis of
Eye Examinations eye disease or for those who have an approved medical condition are also eligible for
one exam every 12 months.
Standard hard/rigid as well as soft/foldable IOL's are covered once per lifetime per eye.
Intraocular Lens (IOL)
(Regional Health Authorities determines coverage in the area)
Dental Some surgical procedures when performed by a dentist.
No coverage except for those under 18 and over 65 receive up to $945.00 for 1 hearing
aid every 5 years.
Various coverages based on medical criteria determined by each individual regional
health authority (RHA).
Chiropractic No coverage.
Podiatry Maximum of $250.00 payable each year. (July to June)
Other Osteopathy not covered unless osteopath is a physician then reimbursed as a physician.
Paramedicals No coverage for massage, naturopath and acupuncture.
Limited coverage for those who qualify under the Aids to Daily Living Program. May be
eligible if a long-term disability, chronic or terminal illness.
In-patient services are covered up to $100 per day, out-patient up to $50 per day and
physician services up to the equivalent of the provincial rate.
