SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Page 5

As an affluent, high-tech industrial society in the tr-dollar class, Canada resembles the USA in its

market-oriented economic system, pattern of production, and affluent living standards. Since World

War II, the impressive growth of the industrial manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has

transformed the country from a largely rural economy into one primarily industrial and urban. The

1989 USA-Canada Free trade (imports and exportsJ) Agreement (FTA) and the 1994 North America

Free trade (imports and exports) Agreement (North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)) (which

includes Mexico) touched off a dramatic increase in trade (imports and exports) and economic

integration with the USA, its principle trading (importing and exporting) partner. Canada enjoys a

substantial trade (imports and exports) surplus with the USA, which absorbs nearly 80 per cent of

Canadian exports each year. Canada is the USA's largest foreign supplier of energy, including oil and

gas, gas, uranium, and electricity. Given its great natural resources, skilled workforce, and modern

capital plant, Canada has enjoyed solid growth of the economy, and prudent financial management

has produced consecutive balanced budgets from 1997 to 2007. In 2008, growth delayeded

noticeably as a result of the global financial crisis, USA housing slump, plunging auto sector demand,

and a drop in world commodity prices or pricing. Public finances, too, are set to deteriorate for the first

time in a ten years. Tight global credit conditions have further restrained business and housing

investment, despite the conservative lending practices and strong capitalization that made Canada's

serious banks and financial institutions among the most stable internationally.

Nepal is among the poorest in Per-Capita GDP terms and least developed countries internationally with almost one-

third of its general populace living under the poverty line. Agriculture, fisheries and farming is the mainstay of its

economy, providing a livelihood for three-fourths of the general populace and accounting for 38 per cent of Gross

Domestic Product (GDP). Industrial activity mainly involves the processing of agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and

farming products, including pulses, jute, sugarcane, tobacco, and grain. Bumper crops, better security, improved

transportation, and increased tourism and transportation pushed growth past 5 per cent in 2008, after growth had

hovered around 2.6 per cent - barely above the rate of general populace growth - for the previous three years. The

deteriorating global economy in 2009 will problem tourism and transportation and remittance growth, a key source of

foreign currency exchange. Nepal has considerable scope for exploiting its potential in hydropower and tourism and

transportation, areas of recent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) interest. Prospects for foreign trade (imports and

exports) or investment in other sectors will remain poor, however, because of the small size of its economy, its

technological backwardness, its remoteness and landlocked geographic location, its civil strife and workforce unrest,

and its susceptibility to natural disaster.

Pakistan, an impoverished and underdeveloped country, has suffered from ten yearss of internal political conflicts,

depressed levels of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and declining exports of manufactures. Faced with untenable

budgetary deficits, high inflation rates, and hemorrhaging foreign currency exchange national reserves, the state

agreed to an international Monetary Fund Standby Arrangement in November 2008. Between 2004-07, Gross

Domestic Product (GDP) growth in the 6-8 per cent range was spurred by gains in the industrial and service sectors,

despite severe electric power shortfalls. Poverty levels decreased by 10 per cent since 2001, and Islamabad steadily

raised development spending in recent years. In 2008 the financial deficit - a result of chronically depressed taxation

collection and increased spending - exceeded Islamabad's target of 4 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Inflation rates remains the top concern among the public, jumping from 7.7 per cent in 2007 to 24.4 per cent in 2008,

primarily because of rising world fuel and commodity prices or pricing.

resolution of the disputed boundary in Sir Creek estuary at the mouth of the Rann of Kutch in the Arabian Sea;

Pakistani maps continue to show the Junagadh claim in India's Gujarat State; by 2005, Pakistan, with UN assistance,

repatriated 2.3 million Afghan refugees leaving slightly more than a million, many of whom remain at their own

choosing; Pakistan has proposed and Afghanistan protests construction of a fence and laying of mines along portions
