Civil Rights News Network
Task: During the 1950’s television began to have an increasingly important role in
society. Families gathered around the television to watch the news, sports and sitcoms.
Students (in partners) will create a one-two minute broadcast of a specific civil rights
event. The script must reflect accurate historical details. We will tape the broadcasts in
the auditorium, and edit them in Movie Maker. In addition to the script and performance,
each set of partners must find two pictures that reflect their topic (unitedstreaming.com)
which will be inserted into the broadcast.
Grading:
Script: must be typed and is due by the end of class on Tuesday. Be creative, but
historical details are essential…. Write it as a news broadcast (characters?)
Performance: The script needs to be memorized (practically-students can have
an emergency copy in front of them but look at the camera)! Eye contact etc, will
be factored in. Also students need to dress the part of a newscaster, so that means
professional, bring a change of clothes if necessary
Final Product: Two pictures must be submitted into my shared folder

Civil Rights Movement
Task: Students will research a specific event during the Civil Rights Movement. They will use
unitedstreaming.com to find a video segment(no more than 3 minutes) that accurately reflects
their topic. Then, students will download the video into their z drive, and then copy it into the
shared folder so we can create a class power point with all of the video segments. Students also
need to submit a paragraph into the shared folder that describes their topic. Do not plagiarize-its
one paragraph. In addition, each person must submit a 1-2 page paper that explains their topic
and why it was significant to the Civil Rights Movement.
