This is an example of our presentation of a small Chinese company, unknown abroad, but which has developed a highly interesting product range. Companies like this are usually supported by two pillars: a core technology, often brought in by the founder and cooperative relationships with universities and R&D institutions.
Yuanlide Marine Biological Co., Ltd.
Yuanlide has been established by the Shandong Shidao Aquatic Group in Rongcheng Shangdong; a conglomerate engaged in fishing, trading in aquatic products, sea transportation, and Zijingshan Street Shidao Community in Penglai, Shandong. Zijingshan is a traditional socialist street committee (jiedao) that has redefined itself as a local investment office. A more accurate translation of the concept would be: 'neighborhood'. The neighborhood is geographically constructed by an official delimitation and a Neighborhood Committee mainly consisting of (semi-) volunteers, usually elderly people, who take care of the household registration, mediating in case of quarrels between neighbors or spouses, etc. In the course of the economic reforms, many neighborhood committees started to set up companies to alleviate unemployment in their region. Neighborhoods are subdivided into communities (shequ). Shidao is a community under Zijingshan. The predecessor of the Shidao Aquatic Group was a local company specialized in fishing and selling fishery products, established in 1956. Yuanlide is a small, still relatively unknown, company specialized in extracting active functional substances from sea plants and animals, in particular sea cucumber. Concentrated sea cucumber powder has a high content of: sea cucumber peptide, mucopolysaccharide, and sea cucumber glucoside. It is claimed to be beneficial for people with diabetes or a decreased immune system, for people convalescing after an operation, and people with a high risk of cancer.
Yuanlide has applied for a patent for its extraction technology (patent number: 200410036429-2). Yuanlide has established working relationships with researchers at a number of universities for the develop of new techniques and products: − Peking University − China Agricultural University − Shandong University School of Public Hygiene − And it has appointed the famous specialist in biological pharmaceuticals, Prof. Zou Yuandong, as consultant.
