spawned its own legion of bloody imitators, a spate of sequels (the first
seven of which are available in a box set along with the original) and a 2009
remake.One key difference between Halloween and Friday the 13th is that the
latter is -- or was, once upon a time -- a mystery, with the audience left
in the dark until the last 20 minutes about who was committing the gruesome
crimes. Of course, about 90% of everyone over the age of 25 knows that the
killer is the deranged, sweater-donned Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer, in a
career-defining role, and in a film that she originally called "shit" after
reading the script), but 1980 audiences really had no way of figuring out
the mystery before Mrs. Palmer enters the film around the 70-minute mark.
After two amorous camp counselors are murdered by an unseen assailant in the
movie's 1958 pre-credit prologue, it's learned by perky but doomed Annie from
local truck driver Enos (Rex Everhart) that a young boy drowned in Camp Crystal
Lake in 1957, but most people wouldn't think to connectthe two events since
it isn't mentioned again for about an hour. Needless to say (but I'll say
it anyway for anyone who may not know), it turns out that the drownedtyke
was Jason, Mrs. Voorhees' son who couldn't swim and whose desperate cries
for help went unheard by the camp counselors. We find that it's this incident
that setsthe grieving mother off her rocker, and she refuses to let the
counselors forget it and sets out to kill every counselor in the area. This
explains the "CH-CH-CH, HA-HA-HA" the audience hears before every killing,
which is actually "Kill, kill, kill, Mother, Mother, Mother" spoken
menacingly through a synthesizer.This film pioneered several oft-copied
slasher concepts, one being the eccentric old town nut who warns the ill-fated
counselors of their impending doom -- in this case, bicycle-riding Crazy Ralph
(convincingly played by late character actor Walt Gorney). Another character
type that has its roots in this film and has been repeated in many slashers
since is the mischievious (but good-natured) practical joker who creates some
false alarms with his foolery, which in Friday the 13th is cheerful Ned (Mark
Nelson). It should be noted that the novice cast does a collectively great
job acting-wise, all likeable and natural performers that most people
wouldn't want to see end up in pieces -- which is very different from today's
slasher films, in which you can't wait to see the annoying, poorly written
(and usually heartless and immoral) characters get their painful
just-desserts. Adrienne King (who I really wish had done more acting after
this and Part II) is a first-classheroine who -- after a long, brutal chase
and struggle -- lops off the head of the delusional Mrs. Voorhees in one
well-timed whack with a machete. There's even a young, hunky Kevin Bacon
shortly after Animal House as typically amorous camper Jack, who -- in one
of the film's trademark splatter sequences -- has his throatturned into a
gushing river of gore when Mrs. Voorhees shoves a machete through his neck
from under the bed. Pretty impossible for such a maneuver to occur in reality,
but it's still a cutting edge for its day gore effect that still looks good
today (except in the uncut version, which reveals some cracks in the
glass).Like Halloween, Friday the 13th will probably seem slow-paced and dull
to some of today's jaded younger viewers who can't appreciate a good, solid
build-up of tension and atmosphere. There is plenty of gore, but it's pretty
well spaced apart, and the movie takes its time in acquainting the audience
with the characters -- which works quite well, since it gives us time to get
to know and like them before theiragonizing deaths and adds an element of
true suspense to the violence. The movie also makes the most of its occasional
jump scares (which are in much greater abundance in the equally great Part
II), and it features the classic lake scare wherein the rotting corpse of
the juvenile Jason pops up from behind Alice's canoe and pulls her screaming
underneath the water. It turns out in the end that she hallucinates the attack
