graduate Program. The 30th annual selection cycle was our most competitive.
Nearly 3,500 secondary schools in 56 regions were invited to nominate can-
didates, including our three new regions: Mississippi, Rhode Island, and the
United Kingdom. One hundred and one finalists were identified, and 27 new
scholars will come to the University of Virginia as members of the Class of
2014. They will join the 90 Scholars in residence who already contribute to life
and culture at the University of Virginia.
In addition, the Foundation’s
Undergraduate Advisory Committee,
chaired by William F. Blue Jr., met
multiple times this year to examine as-
pects of the Undergraduate Program’s
selection process as well as the enrich-
ment program. At the suggestion of
this committee, a new Faculty Advi-
sory Committee was formed, made up
of members of the University faculty.
Members of this new committee will
work with the Foundation to help re-
cruit new Jefferson Scholars and advise
current Scholars.

T he idea grew out of a strategic planning discussion aimed at broaden-
ing the overall reach of the Jefferson Fellowship: Let’s build a facility where
graduate Fellows from across the Grounds, representing nearly every disci-
pline, can assemble, talk, listen, study, and teach. Their cross-disciplinary
interaction, on a daily basis, will fuel discussion and not only strengthen the
University’s graduate student life but enrich the entire University community.
Over the course of the last five years, land Fellows admired the quality and design of

I n response to uncertainty about the pace of financial recov-
ery, the development office devoted fiscal year 2010 to strengthening old
and building new relationships. We are pleased to report that this year the
development team, along with the program directors and the president of
the Foundation, met with well over 1,000 alumni, friends, and parents of the
University, just as we have done in the past. It is through these relationships,
some nearly thirty years old, that the Foundation can report an increase in
philanthropic cash flow for the fiscal year of $10.4 million.

the shinn-mignerey scholarship
The Shinn Family holds a special place for
Beverly Mignerey. At the University of
Colorado, Beverly and her roommate,
Susan Shinn, were best friends. After
Susan’s tragic passing within a year of
graduation, Beverly became like an adopt-
ed daughter to Susan’s parents, Jeanne
and Charles. Beverly went on to marry
Arthur Mignerey and have two children.
When the Mignereys’ first child was born,
a daughter, the Shinns were understand-
ably moved when Art and Beverly named

her Susan.
The Mignereys’ son, Carey, went on to become a Jefferson Scholar from Atlanta in 2000.
With the Shinns’ passing, the Mignerey family saw an opportunity to honor their dear friends
as well as repay the debt of gratitude the Mignereys felt to the Foundation that so gener-
ously provided for their son’s education at the University. Realizing that the Foundation did
not have a Jefferson Scholarship designated for the Shinns’ home state of Colorado, the
Mignereys established the Shinn-Mignerey Jefferson Scholarship to give tribute to their
friends. Charles Shinn was a decorated World War ll pilot, receiving the prestigious Air Medal
for flying ten additional missions for a total of thirty-five. Jeanne and Charles were lifelong
learners, avid world travelers, and had a real zest for life. Now in its seminal year, this new
Jefferson Scholarship will attract students from Colorado worthy to hold the title of the
Shinn-Mignerey Scholar.

Alumni are vital to the well-being of the Foundation, serving as interview-
ers on selection committees and as advisors to the Foundation on various
boards and committees. Their philanthropic contributions help sustain the
Foundation’s growth and development. As the newest members of the alumni
community, every member of the Jefferson Scholar Class of 2010 made a gift to
the Foundation in the year of their graduation.
