Lesson 5
Work continued on the head.
Use the front view of the bird. From the centre of the right eye to the centre of the left eye you
need to obtain a width of 20 mm. You are aiming for this width when you create an eye channel.
It is 11 mm. wide and 20 mm. long. See figure 1 for “before” and Figure 2 for “after”.
For the next stages Graham used a micro motor with an aggressive cylinder shaped bit.
Create a “v” grove about 4 mm. wide and deep starting at the centre point at the top of the head
(see Figure 3) and following along the “head line” (the one that starts at the top and curves down
behind the eye and off toward the back end of the head). See Figure 4. Graham cut along the
centre of the line.
Watch for roundness and puffiness. Check patterns for size to make sure you do not go too deep.
Figure 5 will show you the finished product. Note that there is a ledge along the bottom line.
Figures 6 and 7 will help show what the bird should look like.
In Figure 6 you will see a line above the eye. It is 15 mm. from the top of the head and 9 mm.
from the top of the eye. Round off the area by going from the line above the eye to centre line of
the head.
Smooth out the “groove”. There is a difference in heights but the “groove” must not be seen as a
groove.
For the rounding of the lower area of the head line in Figure 2 find a point half way between the
“ledge” and the bottom line. This will be the high point. Round off the bird. Figure 8 will show
you what the final product for tonight should look like.
