ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES AT NORDIC CENTRE
A guideline for Nordic organizers
This guideline is meant for Nordic Centre member universities who wish to organize academic activities at
the Nordic Centre, Fudan University. The guideline is a guideline and not a set of regulations so any issues
that may be impractical with relation to specific activities can be changed.
The guideline is divided in two parts: ‘EDUCATION activities’ and ‘RESEARCH COLLABORATION
activities’.
For more information or comments to the guideline, please contact Nordic Centre Programme Manager
Martin Bech (martin.bech@nordiccentre.org / +86 139 1703 4050)

Approval of activity
To organize short or long term courses at or in collaboration with the Nordic Centre, the initiating part shall
always fill in the Nordic Centre New Activity Form1 (Click to open). The filled-in form is to be submitted to the
Nordic Centre Programme Manager before 1 April or 1 October for evaluation at the Nordic Centre Council’s
annual meetings (April and November).
The Council evaluates and selects the activities to be organized as well as allocate Nordic Centre funds to
future activities. The applicant will be notified immediately after the first coming Council meeting. After
approval, a Call for Applications (see below) should be made before promotion starts.
Individual members’ courses can be arranged directly in collaboration with the Nordic Centre Programme
Manager.
Organizing Group and Partners
For activities that are open for participants from Fudan and the Nordic Centre member Universities, the
Nordic organizer must have:
1

The co-organizers must take an active part in the activity and contribute to the general planning and
conducting of the activity. In addition, partners from other institutions in Shanghai or elsewhere can also be
included. The Nordic Centre can assist in finding suitable partners at Fudan and at the member universities.

The organizing group is responsible for the academic content of the activity. The following assignments
should be undertaken before, during and after the activity:
Before During After

Participants
Educational activities can be organized for three different groups of participants:
Open courses (announced via ‘call for applications’)
Semi open courses (announced via ‘call for applications’ but only open to participants from Nordic
Centre member universities and/or Fudan University)
Closed courses (are not announced and only open a specific group of students)
It is up to the organizers to decide which of the three apply for their particular course.
Study Credits
The Nordic Centre together with the organizers will provide a certificate to certify number of study hours and
recommended ECTS credits. Ultimately, it is the student’s home institution that approves the number of
ECTS that the course merits.
There are large differences between Nordic (European) and Chinese credit systems and often it is difficult
for Chinese students to obtain study credits if there is no official cooperation agreement connected to the
specific course. The Nordic Centre is working on a long term solution on this issue. For now, organizers are
advised to consult the Nordic Centre or their local Fudan co-organizer for input on how best to ensure that
Chinese students are suitably merited for their participation.
NB: In the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25-30
hours of study work (either in lecture or paper writing).
Promotion
The Nordic Centre will circulate information about activities i.e. ‘call for applications’ at relevant departments
at Fudan University and to the Nordic Centre member universities. In some cases, where the Centre's
network includes relevant people at other institutions (in China or elsewhere) these will also receive
information. Furthermore, all activities are promoted via the Nordic Centre newsletter and on the Nordic
Centre website as well as on the Nordic Centre's other electronic platforms.
It is nevertheless crucial that the organizers at Fudan and Nordic Centre member universities themselves
take active part in disseminating information in their network and home institutions.
