                                         Online Activities

        For the first of the assignments today, you will be starting from www.classzone.com. To
get to the appropriate animations, follow these steps:
   1.   Choose “High School – Science”
   2.   Click on Washington (in the drop-down menu or on the map)
   3.   Click “Find Your Book”
   4.   Then choose to Biology book (2008)
   5.   Choose “Animated Biology”
         For this activity, you’ll need to select the appropriate unit from the menu on the
left side of screen.
                               Unit 2: Chapter 5 – Binary Fission

Answer the questions below on your own sheet of paper using complete sentences (unless you
are asked to draw and label a diagram).
   1. Draw a bacteria cell and label the four important structures shown in the animation.
   2. What two things must happen to the DNA before binary fission can happen?
   3. How does the size of the bacterium change? What effect does this have on the two
      strands of DNA?
   4. How does the bacteria cell divide itself?
   5. What is the outcome of binary fission?
   6. How many cells would you wind up with if there was another cycle of binary fission?
      And yet another cycle?

   For the next assignment, you will need to go to www.cellsalive.com and choose “Mitosis”
from the “Interactive” menu on the left side of the screen.
   1. Click the green “Play” button to watch the animation once – focus on the animation.
   2. Click the green “Play” button again – this time, focus on the picture of the actual cell in
      the upper left hand corner.
   3. Next, click on “Interphase” on the right side of the screen.
   4. On your paper, draw a picture of what the cell looks like during interphase – focus on
      labeling the nucleus, nucleoulus, and the centrioles.
   5. Read the description of interphase below; on your paper, list the three main activities that
      are occurring during this longest part of the cell cycle.
   6. Next, click on “Prophase” on the right side of the screen. Draw a picture of what the cell
      looks like – focus on labeling the DNA, centrioles, and the nucleus.
   7. Read the description of prophase below; on your paper, write 3-4 sentences describing
      what happens during this stage.
   8. Next, click on “Prometaphase” on the right side of the screen. This is stage is often
       included as part of prophase (as in your textbook) Draw a picture of what the cell looks
       like now – focus on labeling the chromosomes, centrioles, and the mitotic spindle fibers.
   9. Read the description of prometaphase below; on your paper, write 3-4 sentences
       describing what happens during this stage.
   10. Next, click on “Metaphase” on the right side of the screen. Draw a picture of what the
       cell looks like – focus on labeling the chromosomes, centrioles, and the mitotic spindle
       fibers.
   11. Read the description of metaphase below; on your paper, answer the questions below:
           a. Where are the chromosomes?
           b. How did they get there?
   12. Next, click on “Anaphase” on the right side of the screen. Draw a picture of what the cell
       looks like – focus on labeling the chromatids, centromere, centrioles, and the mitotic
       spindle fibers.
   13. Read the description of anaphase below; on your paper, describe how the chromatids are
       pulled apart.
   14. Next, click on “Telophase” on the right side of the screen. Draw a picture of what the cell
       looks like – focus on labeling the chromatids, centromere, centrioles, and the mitotic
       spindle fibers.
   15. Read the description of telophase below; on your paper, describe what happens to the
       spindle fibers.
   16. Finally, click on “Cytokinesis.” This is not actually a stage of mitosis, but it is the final
       step necessary for cell division. Draw a picture showing what results from cytokinesis –
       be sure to label the nucleus, nucleolus, DNA, centrioles, and microtubules.
   17. Answer the following questions on your paper:
           a. What is the final outcome of mitosis and cytokinesis?
           b. At the end of cytokinesis, what stage of the cell cycle begins again?
           c. The stages of mitosis (in order) are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
               Create a mneumonic device to help you remember this order; an example might
               be “Please Make A Taco.” Be creative and write your own!

To find the appropriate animations, follow the steps listed at the beginning of this assignment
and select the appropriate unit from the menu on the left side of screen.

                             Unit 2: Chapter 5 – Matching Mitosis

        For this activity, you will be using the pictures of each phase of mitosis to identify other
pictures that match the same phase. When you have successfully placed all of the pictures, raise
your hand and get your teacher’s initials on your paper to show that you have completed the
