Community Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The holiday season is upon us. This season often reminds people the importance

of giving and charity. At Goodwill, we have always believed in giving people a

hand up, not a hand out. When you shop and donate to Goodwill, you help fund

our programs and services which help local individuals with barriers to employ-

ment. For instance, our Workforce Development Department helps individuals

with disabilities train and prepare for employment, and our recently established

Re-Entry Program helps ex-offenders overcome barriers in order to re-enter the

workforce.

Stories of Success

Just as most people are on edge when they enter an unfamiliar environment, Scott was very timid and

shy when he first came to work at the Delaware North Goodwill Retail Store in March of 2008. He was

a year out of high school and had only had two short term jobs. Scott had actually completed a one

month Work Adjustment program through Goodwill’s Workforce Development Department while in

high school in 2006. The Work Adjustment period was at the Attended Donation Center in Powell, and

it allowed Scott to get a first-hand experience of working while also gaining an assessment of his abili-

ties. He was deemed capable and competent, but still needed more work experience to be comfortable at

a job site.

After finishing high school, Scott was connected to Goodwill with assistance from a work services

program and case worker. The case worker continues to follow up with Scott and Goodwill to ensure a

smooth transition into the workplace.

Through the power of work, Scott has grown to be far more confident and self assured. Brenda Sparks,

Store Manager, states, “Goodwill has helped Scott build a foundation of his own self worth outside of Mary Ellen

the home.” When he first started at Goodwill, he was afraid to make wrong decisions. Now, he can

quickly make decisions and explain his reasoning. Scott’s confidence with his given tasks has also

increased his overall comfort in the workplace. Scott

Just as important as what Scott has learned through working for Goodwill, is what he has taught coworkers fortunate enough to

get to know him over the last two years. Scott enlightens others on how to focus on the abilities of others as opposed to their

limitations. He might not be able to multi-task, but given a job, he will do it to his best ability and now with extreme confi-

dence. Coworkers have enjoyed helping him grow his confidence and look forward to watching his skills continue to increase.

Sparks states, “He helps us appreciate just exactly what our mission is about.”
