For students commencing in Semester 1, 2007
The Bachelor of Business is a three years full-time or six years part-time course requiring successful completion of 24
units of study (eight units of study a year full-time and four units of study a year part-time) and a mandatory unit of study
HBG0004 Careers in the Curriculum (normally taken in the second year of full-time study, or equivalent part-time study).
All students must complete the business core (seven Stage 1 units of study normally completed in the first year of full-time
study or the first two years of part-time study) and a selection of majors, minors and electives.

A Major is: an approved grouping of 6 post-core units of study from one specific discipline area, at least two units
of study must be at Stage 3 (eg: HBM330).
A Minor is: an approved grouping of 4 post-core units of study from one specific discipline area, at least one unit of
study must be at Stage 3.
An Elective is: a unit of study which is not taken as part of the core, a major or a minor. Electives are chosen from any of
the units of study offered by any Faculties, subject to meeting pre-requisites and approval from the
Faculties.

Course Requirements
To complete the Business Degree program, each student must complete:
• 24 units of study (300 credit points) as part of the Bachelor of Business
• Mandatory unit of study HBG004 Careers in the Curriculum (zero credit points)
• A maximum of 12 units of study from any specialisation (e.g. Marketing – ‘HBM’ unit of study code prefix)
• A maximum of 10 units of study at Stage 1 (including core business units of study)
• A minimum of 4 units of study at Stage 3
• The mandatory units of study required for professional recognition
(only applicable to students who are enrolled in A042, A043, A044, A045 & A046)
Course Restrictions
There are certain restrictions pertaining to the Bachelor of Business course that students need to be aware of,

• Completion of a major or a minor in a business specific area does not necessarily lead to professional recognition.
Refer to the ‘Information About Business Disciplines’ below for more information.
• Students taking two majors will usually enrol the first Stage 2 unit of study from one major as their eighth unit of study
in first year, and the first Stage 2 unit of study from the second major in their second year. Approval may be given to
take one of the core units of study in the second year under special circumstances.
• Not all units of study are offered in every semester of each year, but units of study will normally be offered in the same
semester each year. This restriction should be taken into consideration when preparing your degree planner.
• A minimum of eight units of study must be completed at Swinburne University. This must include completion of half
the units of study for all majors and minors. At lease one Stage 3 unit of study for any major or minor must be
completed at Swinburne University with the exception of Italian and Japanese language majors or minors. This
regulation must be observed in course plans that include unit of study exemptions, studies completed through
international exchange, cross-institutional study or study abroad.
• A unit of study can only be counted once as part of a major or minor or as an elective (e.g. the units of study HBC224
Financial Management may be counted towards either an Accounting or Finance major or minor, but not both).
• Students are not permitted to enrol in units of study where they have completed other units of study that are deemed to
be equivalent. Equivalent units of study cannot be used for credit.
• The unit of study HAT119 Academic Communication Skills cannot be used for credits towards the Bachelor of
Business.
• Industry Based Learning (IBL) Placement cannot be used for credit towards the Bachelor of Business.

The eight post-core accounting units of study required for professional membership can be structured as one major
and two electives or one major and a minor (to qualify for a minor in accounting, students will need to take another two
units of study, with one unit of study at Stage 3.)

electives or as part of another minor(s), for example, HBE220 Macroeconomics may be taken as part of an economics

Course of study WITHOUT Professional Recognition
Students not seeking professional recognition in Accounting may select any of the accounting units of study listed
above to complete a major or minor. Students must take note of any pre-requisites required when selecting Stage 2 or
3 accounting units of study. Accounting may be separated into three areas: financial reporting, management
accounting for decision-making, and finance. Professional accountants must have a good knowledge of all areas, but
students who wish to improve their decision-making skills should consider the management accounting and finance
areas.

techniques that assist in management decision making and financial management of business organisations, should

The minor in Asian Business focuses on one of the vital regions of the world. It will give students an understanding of the
Asian economic miracle, the Asian financial crisis and the restructuring of Asian economics.

Economics
Economics examines how a society achieves the maximum benefit from available resources and the problem areas

European Business
The European Business minor is a program that is unique in Australia. It outlines the historical, political and legal
background of the European Union and develops in students an understanding of the main features of the regulatory
and marketing environment that is shaping Europe today. The highlight of the European Business minor is that it
offers two units of study that are taken in Europe. The first of these, a European Union Study Tour, involves a three to
four week tour of several European countries and includes briefing sessions with major European companies, visits to
European institutions such as the European Parliament, the European Court of Justice and meetings with
organisations involved in Australia-Europe trade and investment. The second, Work Experience in Europe, involves
three months’ work experience in a European country of choice. Particular emphasis in the minor is placed on Italy,
the fifth economic power in the world. Note: A major in European Business is not offered.

Finance is a field of study concerned with financial and capital markets, government influences on those markets, and
the role of the organisation within the framework. Finance is a relatively recent development as an area of study and
draws on the disciplines of accounting and economics. It is taught by both the Accounting and Economics disciplines.

For those students wishing to specialise in marketing, a minor sequence may be added to the major. To complete the
minor, students need to select four units of study. As such, this major and minor sequence requires students to
complete ten marketing units of study.
Marketing MAJOR – the following are all mandatory units of study
(except where there is a choice between HBM330 and HBM331)

HBM333 Communications Strategy
HBM341 Business Strategy (capstone unit of study, normally taken in last Teaching Period of study of the degree)
Plus one unit of study from the following Stage 3 units of study:
HBM330 Marketing Innovation Management
HBM331 Services Marketing and Management
NOTE: Students undertaking majors in Management and Marketing must complete HBM330 and HBM331 and
one unit of study from the Marketing minor (to replace HBM222 and HBM341) as part of the Marketing major.

• 7 business core units of study
• HBM220, HBM222, HBM223, HBQ229, HBL222, HBM330, HBM331, HBM333, HBM341, one of HBM271,
HBM272, or HBM339 (note: the 10 units of study form a major and minor in Marketing)
• 7 additional units of study that may be taken as a major and one elective, a minor and three electives, or
seven electives.
