Outlook Express - Attachments in E-mail

Problem: When client is sent an e-mail with a .exe file attached, they receive the message

"Outlook Express removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your email:" followed by

the name of the file.

Solution: The simple work around is to rename the file (in the download path window) as it is

detached by changing the .exe extension to a .000 extension and then rename it back to .exe

after the file is detached.

For versions of Outlook Express other than version 6, perform the following:

1. Click on Tools

2. Select Options

3. Then select Security

3.1. Remove the check mark from the box labeled, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or

open that could potentially be a virus”

If it is necessary for client to be able to receive an attachment with the .exe extension, Microsoft

has provided the following solution for Outlook Express 6 (Source: Microsoft Knowledge Base

Article 291387):

By default, Outlook Express 6 uses the Restricted Zone instead of Internet Zone. To

customize the Internet Explorer security settings for Outlook Express 6:

1. Start Outlook Express, and then on the Tools menu click on Options.

2. Click on Security tab and then in Virus Protection section under select the Internet

Explorer security zone to use, click on Internet Zone.

3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box, and then quit Outlook Express.

4. Start Internet Explorer; click on the Tools menu, then Internet Options, then

Security.

5. Click Custom Level and select default.

The security setting that you choose in Internet Explorer will now apply to Outlook Express.

NOTE: Outlook 2002 will block many attachments and requires changes to be made in the

Registry to allow access to them. (See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 290497).
