Why should I choose Business and Finance?
The General Certificate in Education for Business & Finance has been designed to form a
qualification that provides knowledge and understanding of this vocational area. Within the
national qualifications framework their approach lies between the more general AS/A2 level
in Business Studies and NVQ’s in Administration Management. This is an ideal qualification
for those students who want a broad background to the general business environment that
will allow them to progress to further and higher education or employment.
What can I expect to learn?
GCE Business & Finance (Single Award)
Candidates for the GCE Applied Business (Single award) will study six units. There is no
external assessment as all units are coursework based (Block “A”).
GCE Business & Finance (Double Award)
Candidates for the GCE in Business & Finance (Double Award) will study twelve units, six of
which are mandatory and six optional. There is no external assessment as all units are
coursework based (Block “B”).

Unit 1: investigating business Six optional units from an available 16 units
Unit 2: customer care must be selected with negotiation from the
Unit 3: communications course tutor.
Unit 4: finance
Unit 5: business & the law
Unit 6: career planning
Candidates studying both the six-unit and Candidates studying twelve-unit award only
twelve-unit award take all modules listed.
Where does this course lead?
Students who achieve this qualification will be fully prepared to enter a variety of HND or
degree level courses in business related subjects. A six-unit (Single Award) qualification
may also be considered as equivalent to 1 x A2 award for the purposes of admission to a
wide range of degree courses. A twelve-unit (Double Award) qualification may also be
considered as equivalent to 2 x A2 awards for the purposes of admission to a wide range of
degree courses.
Entry requirements:
Students entering this course should have achieved level 2 OCR/GNVQ which equates to 4
GCSE grades A* to C. Skills in Mathematics, English and Information Technology will be
particularly relevant. There is however no prior knowledge required for this specification.
