AUSMIN - 8 November 2010
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and Defence Minister Stephen Smith will host the next Australia-United
States Ministerial (AUSMIN) consultations on Monday 8 November at Government House in
“We look forward to hosting Secretary Clinton and Secretary Gates, two of the highest ranking
members of President Obama’s Cabinet, in Melbourne,” said Mr Rudd.
“Their visit will mark the 25th anniversary of the first AUSMIN talks in Canberra in 1985, and 70 years
of diplomatic relations between Australia and the United States.”
Secretary Clinton’s visit to Australia will be her first as US Secretary of State. Secretary Gates visited
Australia for AUSMIN in 2008.
AUSMIN is the premier forum for strengthening Australia-US Alliance cooperation in the Asia-Pacific
region and globally on foreign policy, defence and strategic matters.
It is scheduled annually, with the venue alternating between Australia and the United States. The last
AUSMIN was held in Washington, DC on 9 April 2009.
“Australia’s Alliance with the United States is the bedrock of our strategic and defence arrangements,”
Mr Smith said.
“For nearly 60 years the Alliance has prospered by supporting our shared strategic interests and
adapting to our evolving operational demands.”
AUSMIN follows Mr Rudd’s meeting in Washington in September with Secretary Clinton, and Mr
Smith’s meeting with Secretary Gates in Hanoi in October.
