1.    PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To lead the development of psychological services for England squads closely integrated
with the other science and medicine disciplines, and practice in all 18 counties.

The leadership, management, and applied practice elements of the role will be keenly
focused on establishing and sustaining a competitive advantage for England Teams
through innovative programmes that ensure England players are physically and
psychologically the best prepared in world cricket.

2.   ORGANISATION CHART

The position sits within the Science and Medicine team of the England Cricket department,
as shown diagrammatically below. The team head, the Science and Medicine Manager, is
one of five senior posts that currently reports to the department head, the Director of
England Cricket:

3. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBLITIES

        To lead the operations of the psychology discipline to efficiently and effectively
         achieve the Science and Medicine department objectives, including performance
         management of the ECB Psychology Team (approx 20 days per year).

        To deliver sport psychological support to the England Women’s squad (approx 20
         days per year).

        To provide support to coaches and players involved in the ECB National Skills Set
         programme during winter training, and in age group competition during the summer
         (approx 45 days per year - 1 day per week).

        To provide leadership to sport psychologists / coaches involved in the ECB
         Regional Skills Set programme, disseminating examples of best practice from the
         national programme (approx 10 days per year).

        To provide leadership and support to sport psychologists and academy directors
         within the 18 County Cricket Academies, ensuring academy players optimise their
         ‘mental’ performance (in line with the ECB programme priorities) while involved in
         county academy programmes (approx 50 days per year - 1 day per week).


4. SUPPLEMENTARY RESPONSIBILITIES

        To attend Medical Panel meetings at the National Cricket Centre to review all
         centrally contracted (including those with England Teams and those undergoing

          rehabilitation), England Development, and National Academy players plus any
          matters arising.

         To work closely with National Coaches to design and develop integrated support
          programmes.

         To manage the discipline budget.

         To provide specialist sport psychology input to the ECB Medical Panel as required
          to support:

             o   Planning and delivery of world’s best practice for the treatment of injuries.
             o   Monitoring of the injured player’s progress.
             o   Recommendation of changes in the course of treatment and the provider if
                 not satisfied with the quality of care or progress at any stage.

         To develop and manage the discipline’s partnerships with external organisations
          such as the First Class County Clubs and the English Institute of Sport (EIS) so as
          to provide seamless support from County Academies to England Teams.

         To lead the development and communication of appropriate protocols, standards
          and systems within the discipline.

         To participate in monthly Science & Medicine Management Team meetings.

         To lead the delivery of performance focused research programmes as prioritised by
          National Coaching staff.

         To ensure adherence of all ECB and related (e.g. County and EIS) staff to central
          reporting / database requirements.

5.   NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB

     a)     Job Context

            The aim of the ECB is “to become and remain the most successful and
            respected cricket nation in the world”.

            Sport psychology is playing an increasingly important role in the development of
            world class cricketers. The ECB Sport Psychologist (National Lead) will play a
            key part in supporting sport psychology consultants operating in existing high
            performance cricket programmes. Support is expected to be world class, will be
            required at weekends, and will be focused around peak times of the year.

            The National Lead will be expected to work from the National Cricket Centre in
            Loughborough on most Mondays in order to attend weekly case conferences of
            all England players.

6.   SKILLS REQUIRED

     Essential

        British Psychological Society (BPS) or British Association of Sport and Exercise
         Sciences (BASES) accreditation (support).
        Senior level experience in the provision of applied sport psychology support
         services to elite athletes and coaches.
        Working experience in the support and preparation of developing young elite
         athletes, with specific expertise in mental toughness.
        Demonstrated familiarity within the game of cricket / professional sport.
        First class leadership and people management skills.
        Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
        Full Driving Licence.
        Computer literacy, including MS office applications and databases.

     Desirable

        Team player, able to work within a national governing body environment.
        Excellent knowledge and experience of budget control and financial
         management.
        Research and development experience in applied sport psychology support.
        Experience in the preparation and delivery of CPD Workshops and conference
         presentations.
