7 Tips to Keep Cool in The Heat
AMA August 08’ issue– submitted by Bill Blaquiere
The right gear and a little preparation will keep a smile on
your face up to and beyond 100 degrees. Here are a few tips
from Tom Mehren, event coordinator for Sportbike Northwest,
to keep in mind:
Cover Up: It’s easy to think you’ll be cooler in a tank top and
a half helmet. Not so. Full gear blocks the sun and can keep
you cooler by controlling the evaporation of sweat. It’s also
safer. A Email from Al & Lois Vogele– Rapid City, SD
Bill and Cheryl
Use an evaporative cooling vest: For years pragmatic rid-
ers were hip to the virtues of wetting down a long sleeved T-
shirt under their gear, but that only works for a few minutes. AThanks for the song. That is very cool.

real good food.

the results are impressive.
Hydrate: You should drink at least a few liters a day while in
the saddle. Some like to use a bladder system like a Camel-
Bak, others are content to drink at stops. However you do it,
do it. Consider an electrolyte add-in instead of energy drinks,
which contain a lot of sugar and caffeine.
Off the Bike: A flexible hat with a full brim all the way around
(not a baseball cap) will keep the sun’s rays off your face,
head and neck.

their maneuvers – feel what those Top Gun pilots do everyday. The Downtown Ex-
change Club will have ice cold beer on sale for just $10.00 a six-pack and the Break-
fast Optimists will have chilled Pepsi available. The Freedom Shuttle will be bringing
people in from The Play Inn, Montana Chad’s, The Powderhorn and the Billings Hotel

The Warm Up® 2008 Rally and AMA Grand National
Singles Flat Track Race – August 1 and 2
Billings will hear the roar of road bikes and race engines as The Warm Up® Rally kicks
off at the base of the MetraPark Grandstands. Friday, get your Sturgis party going with
the sounds of the 7th Ave Band (5:00-10:00 pm) playing great rock and roll, get your
programs signed by some of the country’s fastest pro riders and enjoy food and bever-
ages from some of Billings’ best businesses. The girls of Kickin Promos will be on hand
to wash bikes and cars both days. Vendors will be selling quality merchandise. The 1/8
mile flat track will start at 6pm at Billings Motorcycle Club.
Saturday features a bike blessing by the Christian Motorcycle Association, a poker run
to Red Lodge and music by Black Velvet and the DB Bryant Band. DB has played Day-
tona Bike Week, Myrtle Beach and has an awesome southern rock sound that will get
you in the mood for the fast action of the AMA Grand National Flat Track Race. Dar-
nielle Insurance is sponsoring a fantastic vintage bike show with some amazing old
school machinery.
The GNC race gates open at 5pm and all ticket holders will have an opportunity to visit
the paddock area and meet the riders before the race. Windy Creek will provide more
classic rock music during the show and at the end of the show Hank’s Body Shop will
present a fantastic fireworks show to close the event. Make sure you have your tickets
to see more than 100 of the fastest racers in the country come out of turn four at 100
mph, bumping and drafting to take the lead. For more info visit www.ridethebigsky.
com.
The Warm Up® Rally is a free event for the public. Tickets to the AMA Grand National
