By every measure the inaugural Poker Run sponsored by

By the start of the run the numbers had grown from a little

electricity in the air as 250 rumbling bikes and their riders

started their engines and set out on the 96-mile course with

four stops to pick up the cards for the poker hand (the last

card was obtained at the end of the run). From all accounts

the bikes performed well, the riders were on top of it all and

the course provided a first hand look at the beauty of the

surrounding areas that we have all come to love. One of the

very best parts…. it was an injury free ride!

HEARTS TO HEROES 12 April 2008

It was Hearts to Heroes run again, the 4th one presented

by Barry from Cyclerides.com. It is for support of our troops

through ‘Operation Home Front’ and ‘Packages from

Home’. As usual Barry did an outstanding job.

It started at Christ’s Church of the Valley, Glendale, same

as last year. I rode with the local “Foothills HOG Chapter”.

We had about 30 bikes and a good ride.

Barry had a grand opening again by riding his bike in the

church; this time he went up and down the aisles! Barry had

several soldiers on stage that were stationed in Iraq last

year and also on the satellite TV talking to us. It was great

to have them back; one soldier had been over there several

times and actually volunteered to go back! What a Hero!

Barry also recognized Veterans of past wars and Veterans

that supported our country but were not in during a war. Be-

ing a Vet, I had tears in my eyes several times.

After the presentation, we all rode to Westgate, police

escorted, with bikes as far as you could see in front and

behind you. Sheriff Joe did an outstanding job blocking

the streets and making this a safe run. There were a lot of

people watching from the roadside as we passed and we

had a great time at Westgate.

I was told this was the last ‘Heart’s to Heroes’ run. I look

forward to it every year, Barry does a great job. I will see

what we can do next year to show our support for the

troops.
