Denver’s Nose Doc, Dr. Jeffrey Raval, to present a new rhinoplasty “nose job” technique to fellow
surgeons at annual meeting of American Academy of Plastic Surgery
DENVER, Colo. -- Jeffrey Raval, MD, FACS, of Denver will present a new Rhinoplasty technique using
DermaMatrix as the ideal graft material to fellow surgeons attending the Annual Meeting of the American
Academy of Plastic Surgery to be held in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 30, 2010.
DermaMatrix Acellular Dermis was introduced to the surgical market in 2006 and shortly thereafter Dr.
Raval began using DermaMatrix instead of Alloderm as the preferred graft material in Rhinoplasty
surgeries. DermaMatrix is a human allograft derived from donated skin, he explained, and the cells are
removed to minimize inflammation or rejection at the surgical site and the acellular dermis is then
freeze-dried for preservation. Alloderm, on the other hand, displays resorption characteristics, requires a
long rehydration time, and has a short shelf life of only 2 years and must be refrigerated during that time.
The advantages in using DermaMatrix, according to Dr. Raval, are that it typically rehydrates quickly to a
uniformly soft and pliable consistency and is bacterially inactivated, passing the USP standard for sterility.
Because it is stored in a freeze-dried form it has a three-year shelf life at room temperature and a 90%
consistency of thickness with greater tensile strength. Even more impressive is that DermaMatrix is easier
to surgically manipulate and features decreased resorption for improved longevity, Dr. Raval notes.
Dr. Raval, a double board certified surgeon – he certified in both plastic surgery and otolaryngology or
ENT (ear, nose and throat) -- with offices in Cherry Creek North neighborhood, the epicenter of upscale
shopping and dining in Denver. He’s regarded by fellow surgeons as the premiere revision rhinoplasty
surgeon throughout the Western States. Revision rhinoplasty is more complex than the original nose job
because of the scar tissue that results from any nose surgery.
“Rhinoplasty poses a number of challenges—the ideal graft material being one of them,” says Dr. Raval.
Besides Rhinoplasty, Dr. Raval is a cosmetic plastic surgeon treating the head and neck from non-invasive
procedures to face, forehead and neck lifts. He adds that his experience as an ENT, with years of training
both the outside of the head as well as the inside, gives him a definite advantage when treating patients. His
practice, called Raval Facial Aesthetics, is shared with Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics at 250 Steele St.,
Denver, where Raval is owner and medical director. The Raval menu of in-office services extends from
laser hair and tattoo removal to a procedure Dr. Raval calls “The Weekend Facelift” -- injections of fillers
to plump up the aging face that has lost its youthful collagen.
A video of the new DermaMatrix Rhinoplasty procedure pioneered by Dr. Raval is now available for
viewing on the practice website www.ravalmd.com. Dr. Raval adds that the surgical video, while
informative, is also graphic and warns visitors not comfortable with surgery to refrain from viewing.
