Danville takes top 3 in Student Congress
Danville High School won four of the top six awards including 1st through 3rd places at
the Kentucky High School Speech League State Debate Tournament held at Western
Kentucky University March 23 and 24. Danville sent nine students to the annual Student
Congress, a mock legislature contest where students propose, debate, and vote upon bills
and resolutions in chambers of Congress. Seven of Danville's nine entries advanced to the
Super Congress, or top 20 competitors, for a final session. When the voting was
complete, senior Kevin Smiley was named State Champion in Student Congress;
sophomores Sebastian Pyrek and Hunter Kendrick placed 2nd and 3rd, and senior Molly
Weston rounded out the top six with a 6th place finish.
Danville has won the Student Congress three of the five years it has been held at the
KHSSL Debate tournament (with state runners-up the other two years). Although DHS
did not compete in the other two debate events at the state Debate tournament, DHS
placed 4th overall in the team results due to its strong showings in Student Congress.
Also advancing to Super Congress from DHS: Kim Milburn, Ralph Morrison, Anderson
Salinas.

DALLAS: Danville High School's Ross Johnson, Mason Scisco, and Ralph Morrison all
earned awards at the 2006 National Forensic League National Speech Tournament held
June 19-24 in greater Dallas, Texas. Contests were held in six main speech events plus
three debate events and Student Congress, and the participants were the winners of 106
District tournaments throughout the United States, its territories, and guest nation South
Korea.
Over 200 entries participated in each of the main events at the national tournament. The
top sixty in each event advanced to the octofinal rounds with subsequent rounds of thirty
(quarters), fourteen (semifinals), and six (finals). Danville's Mason Scisco and Ross
Johnson each advanced to the octofinals in their events (Dramatic Interpretation and
Original Oratory) before being eliminated.
Contests were also held in six supplementary/consolation events for students eliminated
from main events at any point before quarterfinals. Johnson placed 6th in Prose Reading,
the largest of these events, with his reading of Robert Olen Butler's "Jealous Husband
Returns in Form of Parrot." Ralph Morrison, who had participated in Duo Interpretation
as his main event, advanced to the semifinals of Expository Speaking with his unique
speech about the history and psychology of "Yo Mama" jokes. Johnson, Morrison, and
Scisco are all recent graduates of DHS and will attend Columbia University, Williams
College, and Cornell University, respectively, in the fall.
The Kentucky District placed very well at the tournament. In addition to the students
from Danville High, the following students advanced to the octofinal round at the
tournament: Calloway County's Chelsea Darnell, Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Graves
County's Quentin Johnson, International Extemporaneous Speaking; Boone County's
Kathleen Burke, International Extemporaneous Speaking; Rowan County's Matthew
Whittaker, Humorous Interpretation; Rowan County's Ariel Perkins, Domestic
Extemporaneous Speaking; Kentucky Country Day's Brian Cass, Original Oratory.
Additionally, Boone County's Spencer Greenhalgh (Senate) and Jordan Delaney (House)
advanced to the semifinals of Student Congress.
Kentucky District chair and Danville High coach Steve Meadows remarked that he was
very pleased with Kentucky's results. "Often, Kentucky is given a bad name by other
states -- that we don't wear shoes, that we can't speak correctly -- and the fact that ten of
Kentucky's eighteen entries placed in the top fourth of their events shows that great
educations can come from Kentucky. Our kids are our proof."
