SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

WI actively partners with schools and other community organizations, leveraging WI’s

assets to better serve youth and families in our community. In 2007 WI worked with The

Blake School, Groves Academy, Keystone IDT School, LearningWorks, Minnesota Life

College, Project Success, Neighborhood House, School of Environmental Studies, Upward

Bound, and many others. WI works collaboratively with partner organizations to develop

programming that meets the special needs of their student or client population, using

wilderness areas as learning environments that extend and enhance classroom work.

Including everyone in life’s adventures is at the heart of our mission. We actively seek to include people from

all walks of life. Wilderness Inquiry is unique because people with disabilities and those without disabilities

participate together as peers on the journey.

In 2007, 45% of all WI participants were people with disabilities and chronic illness. Wilderness Inquiry serves people with the

A Project in the Making: WI base near the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Over the last 20 years, the Apostle Islands has become Wilderness Inquiry's most popular tripping area.

In 2007, we found the perfect parcel of land at Little Sand Bay within 2000 feet of Lake Superior. Our plan is to

create an accessible base for our Apostle Islands programs. A committee of dedicated volunteers is working to help

us secure resources necessary to complete this plan. For more information contact John Scanlan, M.D. at

Workplace Giving WI is a proud member of:

Thank you to the many donors who contribute to Wilderness Inquiry through

workplace giving. These gifts make it possible for Wilderness Inquiry to continue to provide

outdoor adventures to people with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Wilderness Inquiry is proud to be a member organization of the Minnesota Environmental Fund (MEF). Your

workplace gift to MEF helps to ensure a sustainable environment that we as Minnesotans can continue to

enjoy now and for years to come.

If you are a federal employee, you can support our mission by designating Wilderness Inquiry on your pledge sheet during the

Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Contributions may also be designated to Wilderness Inquiry through United Way.

For further information on workplace giving, please contact Sarah Milligan-Toffler at

12 612-676-9413 or sarahmtoffler@wildernessinquiry.org.

PARTICIPA NT PROFILE

NA NCY M.

Nancy’s first trip was in 1985 with her sister, who had C-7 quadriplegia. Nancy has been

on nine trips since as an able-bodied participant, as a person with a disability, as

someone testing her abilities after regaining function, and as the oldest person on a

trip. When asked why she continues to go on WI trips, Nancy said, “None of my friends

would even consider sleeping in a tent with a perfect stranger in a wilderness area

they’ve never been to before, let alone paddle all day, drive a dog sled, or help cook

and do dishes. Add people with disabilities into the mix, and my friends think I’m

nuts. What they are missing is the incredible joy I’ve experienced with all the people

on these trips.”
