Standard being addressed in an abbreviated format: L.A. 7.6.2.4 (Importance of legal and ethical issues)
Describe Today’s Activities: Students receive introduction to the media center by Jacki West. Jacki
discusses plagiarism and citations in detail with students. Hand out plagiarism contract. Additional
discussion by teacher of missing grades for progress reports Wednesday.
Describe Today’s Assessment: Plagiarism contract due back by Friday, signed.
TUESDAY

Topic/Topics being covered: 1. Non-fiction reading 2. Collect Journals (Class work) 3. Test Answers
discussion/questions/expected format 4. “The Universe” Part 4
Standard being addressed in an abbreviated format: LA. 7.2.2.2 (Identifies main ideas and relevant
details in non-fiction writing)
Describe Today’s Activities: Discussion of tests and grades. Clarification of writing response answers and
expectations using RAGE (Restate Topic, Answer Question, Give Specific Examples, End with a Closing
Statement). Differentiated Instruction (card pairing): Students read out loud in pairs “War of the Worlds
Radio Incident” text. Collect journal materials for class work grade. View “The Universe”, Science Fact vs.
Fiction (10 mins)
WEDNESDAY
Grade and Subject: 7th grade ADV Language Arts
Topic/Topics being covered: 1. “The Universe” Part 4 2. Timed Writing
Standard being addressed in an abbreviated format: LA. 7.3.1.1 (Prewriting from multiple sources-
teacher led discussion, etc.)
Describe Today’s Activities: Students will view “The Universe” Part 4 while considering the question, “If
you were the last person to leave Earth for Mars, what items would you leave in a time capsule for future
people to discover?” Each class chooses how much time they want to work and timer is set. Students
cannot stop writing for that amount of time. Sharing of ideas (practice reading aloud in front of audience).
Describe Today’s Assessment: Completion of timed writing (graded during journal check). Timed writing
will be used for further prewriting and drafting.
THURSDAY

Topic/Topics being covered: 1. Finish reading “War of the Worlds Radio Deception”/Questions 2. Good
Introductions Examples, Discussion
Standard being addressed in an abbreviated format: LA. 7.2.2.4 (Identifying Characteristics of different types of
texts)
Describe Today’s Activities: Students will complete “War of the Worlds” Questions, Sections B, C, and D (Using
Words Precisely and Author’s Approach). Discuss correct answers, focusing on Author’s Approach and Using
Words Precisely sections. Hand out magazine article introductions and teacher led class discussion: What is good
or different about teach piece? What tools does the author use to make it different?
Describe Today’s Assessment: “War of the World Radio Deceptions” Answers, as graded in journals.
FRIDAY
Grade and Subject: 7th grade ADV Language Arts
Topic/Topics being covered: 1. Finish Good Intros Discussion/Examples using teacher’s writing 2. Tone, Author’s
Purpose, Plan, Product, Subject vs. Topic Notes 3. Begin Expository Introduction
Standard being addressed in an abbreviated format: LA. 7.3.2.1 (Draft writing using prewriting using main ideas
from the pre-writing plan)
Describe Today’s Activities: Students take a short set of notes about Tone, Author’s Purpose, Plan, Product, and
Subject vs. Topics. Pass out current magazine examples to refer to, looking for author’s tone and purpose in each.
Show teacher’s own timed writing on screen, and demonstrate how to find tone (picking out related word in text)
and topics from timed writing brainstorming. Students create their own introductions with the subject “Imagine
you are the last person to leave Earth for Mars. What items would you leave in a time capsule for future
scientists/scholars to discover?”
Describe Today’s Assessment: Student will bring completed introduction to class on Monday for teacher
review/comments.
