Site Librarian, The Bartlett: Faculty of the Built Environment (ref: 48/07/08) UCL – a university, a community, a world-class reputation… UCL is one of the UK’s leading universities; a world-class multidisciplinary research and teaching institution, whose staff and former students have included 19 Nobel Prize winners. UCL Library Services UCL Library Services has almost 2 million items and subscribes to over 12,000 journals in a combination of print and electronic format covering the sixty or so subjects which are taught in the College. The role of UCL Library Services is to support learning, teaching and research in the global university that is UCL. Members of staff in UCL Library Services support this outreach through their professionalism and their dedication to offering information services of the highest quality. The combined staff in UCL Library Services totals around 250.
Conditions of service Holidays: Full time staff are entitled to 27 days paid annual leave and leave for part time staff is granted on a pro rata basis. UCL also closes for a period at Christmas and Easter, at which times staff benefit from a total of 6 ‘closure days’ in addition to Bank Holidays. Hours of work: Hours of work for full-time members of staff are 36.5 per week excluding lunch breaks. Increments: After passing probation members of staff will receive one increment on the appropriate scale on 1 August each year until the top point on the scale is reached. Pension: Staff on grades 1-6 are eligible to join SAUL, which is a final salary scheme with a current employee contribution rate of 6% and an employer rate of 13% of salary. Staff on grades 7 and above are eligible to join USS, which is a final salary scheme with a current employee contribution rate of 6.35% and an employer contribution rate of 14% of salary. Probation: Appointments are subject to the receipt of satisfactory references and a probationary period of 6 months (for staff on grades 1-6) and 9 months (for staff on grades 7 and above). Benefits Campus Facilities The main UCL campus has subsidised cafeterias/bars and shops, gym and a travel agent. UCL staff can also benefit from corporate membership at a Tottenham Court Road gym. Flexi-time: UCL Library Services operates a generous flexi-time scheme on some of its sites which is available to all full-time staff working on those sites and some part-time staff. Season Ticket Loans: A season ticket loan is available to staff who have successfully completed their probationary period with the facility to repay through a monthly deduction from salary. General description of post The role of UCL Library Services is to support learning, teaching and research in UCL. UCL Library Services is a multi-site operation with specialist services for research and teaching. The Bartlett Library is one of these sites, providing a range of information services in the fields of Architecture, Planning and Construction Management to staff, students and researchers in the Faculty of the Built Environment. The Bartlett Site Library also serves the wider UCL and UK academic community. The role of Site Librarian encompasses both site management and subject responsibilities. Site responsibilities include the supervision and management of staff, services and estate. Site librarians also develop and maintain collections in designated subject areas; act as the primary point of reference on subject resources; promote and provide training and other subject-related services; represent the policies of UCL Library Services to relevant communities of users; and act as a channel of communication by which academic departments can convey their needs and views on library matters. The postholder will work as Site Librarian for the UCL Faculty of the Built Environment, and will also act as Subject Librarian to the UCL Department of Management Science and Innovation. The postholder will be a member of the Academic Support Group in Library Services, with responsibility to the Sites Coordinator for the provision of a library service in the site library for the Faculty of the Built Environment. The postholder will also be part of the Science Team, which currently provides subject support to three UCL Faculties: the Faculty of Built Environment, the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. The postholder will have line management responsibility for the Head of the Site Issue Desk, and will take day-to-day responsibility for site management, liaison, collection management and information skills training (including VLE-based provision) in support of the needs of staff and students of the UCL's Faculty of the Built Environment, and UCL Department of Management Science and Innovation, complemented by a wider responsibility to support researchers in higher education generally, both in the UK and internationally. Where necessary, training will be provided to ensure that the postholder is equipped to deliver UCL Library Services' e-learning agenda, and can effectively train UCL staff and students. Main duties of post: Site responsibilities, UCL Bartlett Site Library Managing staff, including line management of the Issue Desk Head, and overseeing all recruitment, ongoing training, line management and appraisal at the Site. Day-to-day responsibility for all services delivered at the Site. Contributing to the strategic planning of services delivered at the Site. Managing the Site estate, ensuring that appropriate maintenance is carried out, ensuring that health and safety and equipment matters are addressed appropriately, and assisting with the planning and implementation of refurbishment projects.
Collection management
Managing subject collections in Architecture, Town Planning, and Management, including the evaluation, selection and relegation of material, in both print and electronic formats. Managing designated book budgets, and overseeing expenditure on periodicals and other materials. Classifying books and maintaining schemes of classification. Developing relevant sections of UCL Library Services' Collection Management Policy.
Liaison Liaising with designated academic departments and learned societies. Representing UCL Library Services on relevant Departmental and Faculty Committees. Serving on internal Library Services committees and working groups, and other appropriate committees within or external to UCL, as required. Actively promoting Library resources and the training role of Library Services to academic departments. Information skills training Designing and delivering training in the use of Library services and resources for staff and students, leading classes and producing printed and on-line subject resource guides and training materials. Introducing new staff and students to Library Services. Assisting with development of on-line information skills training resources, and the deployment of VLE technology for this purpose, across the Science Team; liaising with members of other Subject Teams working in the same area. Dealing with specialist subject enquiries. Staffing of Enquiries Desk as required. Other duties: Contributing to the preparation of bids for external funding, and participation in externallyfunded projects, as required. Serving on recruitment panels, as required.
