Extra! Have you discovered…? This month Arts NT draws your attention to four areas of
interest.
1. ACVA Lab is a forward thinking initiative to promote the pioneering work of Australian artists and
technologists using virtual world platforms. ACVA Lab advances the development of artistic
networks, prototypes and exchange with its central question: “What could a virtual art lab be if it was
imagined by artists for artists?”
ACVA Lab provides insights into the future directions of arts practice and a window into a virtual arts
lab. The team directing the initiative believe the future of virtual reality is not a singular environment,
but a rich network of digital practice as diverse as that found in the physical realm. In this light ACVA
Lab is best considered a context from which a new network of artists will emerge, aided by the Lab
workshop, in world virtual sessions, and collective web presence.
ACVA Lab, supported by Australia Council for the Arts, has a broad mandate to connect established
and emerging artists from around Australia through this initiative, and also an open invitation for
curators, educators, and the next generation of artists to be involved in shaping the future of virtual
art. Participate in the ACVA Lab Workshop: 18-20 February 2010 in Melbourne. 10 places are
available. Applications close 8th January 2010

Funding bands to tour: The Contemporary Music Touring Program
22 December 2009
Arts Minister Peter Garrett is calling on musicians to apply for Contemporary Music Touring Program
funding so they can take their music to the regions. Bands have until 5 February 2010 to apply
under the current round.
“The Contemporary Music Touring Program has helped bands take an amazing range of music
forms and styles on tour since the program began in 1999,” Mr Garrett said.
“They have ranged from well-known performers such as Kate Miller-Heidke to start-up bands who
are cutting their teeth on the circuit.”
“You don't need a high profile to qualify for funding. It's about capacity-building and pleasing
audiences by bringing them new and exciting music.”
The Australian Government recognises that artforms like music are big contributors, not just to
regional economies, but to the cultural atmosphere in places outside the big city.
“All over the country, Australians are sharing a love of music, and I know that it is a myth that the
country only appreciates 'country',” said Mr Garrett.
“Any music style is welcomed, and audiences demonstrate a great capacity to broaden their musical
horizons.”
Recent funding round successes include the Tom Ugly band, who described their music as a
“colourfully decorated blend of bangs, buzzes, babbles and booms” for listeners or dancers. The
band toured four states in 2009 with program funding of $10,000. www.tomugly.com
The Bob Corbett Band used funding of $10,000 to take their blend of blues, world, pop, country and
folk to 11 destinations in New South Wales and Western Australia, part of anational tour.

Australian Musicians to Support International Acts
Arts Minister Peter Garrett [has] released a discussion paper on the Foreign Music Act Certification
Scheme outlining a proposed approach which could implement the Bringing Aussie musicians
centre stage election commitment.
The proposal for a new scheme that, if implemented, would ensure Australian musicians get to
share the spotlight with international acts touring the country.
“I encourage musicians, promoters, tour organisers and interested community members to comment
on the discussion paper,” Mr Garrett said.
“Bringing Aussie musicians centre stage is one of the Government‟s key election commitments for
this industry. We are committed to ensuring that Australian music acts have opportunities to
leverage exposure, gain valuable performing experience, and make new industry connections when
international acts tour our country”.
“The discussion paper outlines how a proposed certification scheme would be developed as a
potential way of implementing this commitment. It includes an amendment to the Migration
Regulations 1994 which will require incoming musicians to engage at least one local band or
musician as a support act. This will be a requirement of their Temporary Entertainment Visa, and, if
implemented, could for the first time provide certainty to Australian musicians.”
The proposed scheme suggests that local support act requirements will not apply to:
performances as part of a festival where a local Australian band already features
a joint concert where a local Australian band already features
performances as part of a competition
performances as part of a theatrical music show or production
a private performance (birthday, wedding etc)
performances in venues with capacity below 400 people
performances of a specific cultural nature for which a support act may not be available or
culturally appropriate.
“It could apply to large scale concerts by international acts, opening doors for Australian musicians
to recording, airplay and advertising opportunities as well as helping to create a sustainable
contemporary Australian music industry,” Mr Garrett said.
The closing date for submissions is 12 February 2010. The discussion paper is available from
www.arts.gov.au/localsupportacts

Positive signs on the cusp of a new decade
17 December 2009
As the „noughties‟ comes to a close, and a new decade begins, there are good reasons for optimism
in the arts in Australia. Whilst talk about the economy may have been cautious throughout the year,
the impact on private sector support for the arts does not appear to have been as bad as many
feared…..There are a number of factors involved. The global recession has not been as damaging
to the Australian economy as was first feared; many businesses have confidence in the benefits that
arts sponsorships bring; and, very importantly, a lot of arts organisations have effectively built
strategic relationships which have helped them weather the changing economic times…. Many of
our most prominent business leaders vouch for the fact that partnering with the arts is an effective
way to connect with creativity and critical thinking, essential tools for contemporary business. The
growing number and quality of nominations for AbaF‟s annual awards is testament to the fact that
many businesses „get it‟.

Victoria, to see first hand the benefits of a $5.2 million Government initiative to improve arts
education for young people. The Creative Education Partnership: Artist in Residence Initiative, a
four year program rolling-out around the country, sees professional artists working with students and
teachers in Australian schools. “Here at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children one of the nation's
leading children's theatre groups, the Polyglot Puppet Theatre, has been working with students and
staff to explore ideas through drawing, puppet making, comic book creation and physical theatre
techniques. “This is one of the first residencies undertaken through the Artists in Residence
Program and is a really inspiring example of how this program can provide a whole new set of
experiences for students.”
