2008 SEASON PREVIEW
The Washington and Lee women’s soc-
cer program has an illustrious history and
has continued to prove it is one of the most
consistent and successful programs in the
country. In 2007, the Generals produced a
16-4 overall record and a 9-2 Old Dominion
Athletic Conference mark to improve their
string of consecutive winning seasons to 15.
Additionally, W&L advanced to the ODAC
semifinals for the 19th-straight season.
Eighth-year Head Coach Neil Cun-
ningham and his squad of 11 returners and
13 newcomers, the largest incoming class
since Cunningham’s arrival, are eager to
carry on in 2008.
“We have more talent and depth than
ever before, so if we produce early on, we
should be set for a great season,” quipped
Cunningham. “The key will be how quickly
we can mesh together. With the leadership
returning, we certainly are poised for a run
at being a contender for the league at the end of the season.”
W&L lost five players to graduation last year, Haley Bunting, who earned Second
Team All-ODAC honors, Martha Caulkins, Diana Dozier, Shana Oltmans and Mary Clair
Turner -- a tough contingent to replace. However, with senior captain Anne Van Devender
headlining the five-member senior class, the season looks bright.
Van Devender was named the 2007 ODAC Player of the Year and garnered First
Team All-ODAC, All-State, and All-Region honors, as well as Second Team All-America
laurels. Her selection as the league’s best player was W&L’s first since Nancy Mitchell
‘91 received the award following the 1991 season. Van Devender led the Generals in
scoring with 40 points (15g, 10a) and her 15 goals were good for sixth all-time at W&L.
Her 10 assists rank fifth all-time, while her 40 points represent the fourth-best season
total in school history. Van Devender's career point total (116 pts.) already ranks third
all-time.
“Obviously Anne is crucial to our offense as both a distributor and a goal-scorer,”
noted Cunningham. “Anne’s senior leadership will also be important this year and I am
confident she will put forth all of her effort to make things happen.”
With the loss of Caulkins, the fourth-leading scorer in 2007, senior Katie Kern and
sophomore Laura Yungmeyer will help fill the void and join Van Devender up top as the
only other returners, while first-years Kat Barnes, Allie Espina and Anne Masich will
compete for starting nods.
Kern, who has played in the midfield the last three years, competed in all 20 games
last season and totaled seven goals, including three game-winners, along with three as-
sists. Yungmeyer played in 14 of the 20 contests and registered six points on one goal
and four assists.
“Katie has tremendous speed on the outside, which will be key to the offense,” said
Cunningham. “Laura knows how to provide good service from the left and I think that is
very beneficial. The three first-years are technically sound and smart. I hope they will
be able to supply the ammunition for the rest of the forwards.”
Like the offense, the Generals’ defense will also return and welcome players. Key
returners include seniors Marisa Van Brunt and Sara Foster-Reeves, who helped lead
the W&L defense to a 0.59 goals-against average and posted 11 shutouts a season ago.
Van Brunt and Foster-Reeves will protect senior captain and goalkeeper Kiki Moreo, while
seven new defenders will compete for a spot in the starting line-up. Even with such a
large number of rookies, Cunningham feels that will only provide additional depth to the
team.
2
geneRals soCCeR
Van Brunt earned First Team All-ODAC and All-State honors and Second Team
All-Region accolades after starting 19 contests last year. Even as a defender, she still
registered 11 points on five goals and one assist. Foster-Reeves garnered Honorable
Mention ODAC honors after starting 19 games, while Moreo already tops the W&L record
book in career goals-against average (0.46) and shutouts (31). She finished last season
with a 0.68 goals-against average.
“Marisa has been the rock at center back the last three years,” reflected Cunningham.
“Her size, athleticism and speed will continue to serve us well. Kiki’s leadership will be
crucial. Her ability to make that big save in important games has been key for our team
the past few years and I hope she continues that this season.”
First-year Corinne Smith will compete for one of the starting positions at left center
back. Smith was an all-conference, all-region and all-state honoree her junior and senior
years at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, N.C.
“Corinne has tremendous athleticism and is a great two-footed player,” remarked Cun-
ningham. “I think it will be a great balance and I think she will work well with Marisa.”
Just like the offense and defense, there will be a mix of veterans and rookies in the
midfield. Unchanged will be junior Roz Klann, who was named First Team All-ODAC and
Second Team All-State in 2007. Klann started every game and was the second-leading
scorer, totaling 17 points (8g, 1a).
Junior Maggie Sutherland will switch to the midfield this year after working in the
back the last two seasons. Sutherland started each contest and registered one goal last
season. According to Cunningham, Sutherland is, “a great ball winner and distributer.”
I expect her to anchor the midfield for us this year.”
Additionally, look for sophomores Taylor Garrett and Caroline Lamberti and first-
years Dory Blackey and Hannah Deming to step up and contribute. Garrett and Lamberti
combined to total three goals and two assists, respectively in 2007.
While a lot of readjusting will take place early on with the lineup, the options are
endless for what Cunningham and his squad can do in 2008. According to Cunningham,
“the drive and will is stronger than ever before,” especially with the seniors, who have
already tasted success on the conference and national level.
“I am convinced we have the perfect formula to get what we need to achieve,” noted
Cunningham. “The will to win and succeed is there and I believe if we set the standard
early on, we will be in line for a great season.”
Cunningham and his troops will be tested early on as they compete on the road in
the Transylvania University Tournament against Centre and Transylvania. W&L will return
to Lexington and take on ODAC-foe Roanoke the following weekend. The Generals fell
to the Maroons (1-2) last season in the semifinals of the ODAC tournament. Additionally,
this year’s slate includes games against recent national champion Messiah and other
strong soccer programs, like Mary Washington.
The excitement is
definitely in the eyes of
this years’ team. With the
team's enthusiasm, Cun-
ningham is confident the
Generals are ready to get
back to being an ODAC
contender at the end of the
season.
"The ensemble of new
and old players, along with
hard work and dedication,
should set us up for a break-
through year,” remarked
Cunningham. "This year's
team is more dedicated
than ever to be successful
and win W&L an ODAC
crown."

NEIL CUNNINGHAM, HEAD COACH
Neil Cunningham is in his eighth year as head
women's soccer coach and second year as director
of physical education at Washington and Lee.
Cunningham's first seven years have resulted
in some of the finest seasons in school history and
he has posted an 103-20-16 (.799) overall record
during that time.
Four times Cunningham has led the Generals
to the NCAA Tournament and twice he has guided
W&L to an ODAC title. His 2007 team finished the
year at 16-4 overall.
Cunningham's 2006 squad set new program
standards in going 19-1-3 overall. The Generals
advanced to the NCAA "Elite Eight" and were ranked
10th in the final NSCAA Division III Poll. W&L also led all of collegiate women's soccer
with a miniscule 0.127 goals-against average. Following the season, Cunningham was
named ODAC Coach of the Year and NSCAA Division III South Region Coach of the
Year.
His initial W&L team in 2001 posted an 11-4-1 overall record and advanced to the
ODAC Tournament Semifinals. His second season resulted in a 17-2-3 overall record,
the program's first ODAC Tournament title, and the first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament
where the Generals advanced to the South Regional Semifinals. Washington and Lee
earned its first-ever national ranking that season and finished the campaign ranked 16th
in Division III. For his efforts in 2002, Cunningham was voted the ODAC Coach of the
Year, NSCAA Division III South Region Coach of the Year and Virginia College Division
Coach of the Year.
In 2003, Cunningham led the Generals to a 15-2-3 mark and the school's second
straight ODAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. W&L advanced to the NCAA
Sweet 16 before falling in double-overtime. The Generals were ranked as high as sixth
nationally and finished the season 14th in the NSCAA Poll.
The 2004 season saw W&L post a 12-4-3 overall record and a third straight appearance
in the ODAC Championship Game, while his 2005 squad finished 13-3-3 overall, was
ranked as high as 24th nationally, and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament
field.
Cunningham came to Washington and Lee from Savannah College of Art & Design
where he served as head coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams since
1995. Cunningham's women's team posted a 62-30-4 overall record during his six seasons
and advanced to the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Division III Tournament. His 2000 squad was
ranked as high as 21st nationally and finished the season ranked fourth in the NCAA
South Region.
Cunningham's men's teams at Savannah A&D went 39-34-2 overall during his five
seasons as head coach.
Cunningham works at the Brown University Soccer School and University of Virginia
Soccer School. He also serves as the Executive Director of Valley AFC in Roanoke,
VA.
A native of Manchester, England, Cunningham taught physical education at the St.
James School in Bolton, England from 1992-94.
Cunningham earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the West London
Institute of Higher Education and gained a master of science in sport leadership from
Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003. He holds a U.S. Soccer Federation License
and a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
Cunningham and his wife, Susan, W&L's Director of Major Gifts, reside in Lexington
with their son, Daniel and daughter, Anna.

ALSTON PARKER WATT FIELD
Washington and Lee plays its home soccer games on the Alston Parker Watt Field,
which was designed by Clough, Harbour & Associates and completed in the summer of
2003 at a cost of $1.50 million.
The field features elevated bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators, a state-of-the-art
press box and sound system, and a removable netting system at the ends of the soccer
field behind the goals.
The field surface consists of bluegrass natural athletic turf which is underlaid by
sand-based drainage and an irrigation pump. The surface is surrounded by vinyl white
fencing which provides a stadium atmosphere.
Also completed as part of the project were several adjacent practice fields and a
1000-square foot concessions and restroom facility.

KENNETH P. RUSCIO, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Ken Ruscio officially began his duties as
the University's 26th president in July 2006.
Ruscio earned a B.A. in politics from Wash-
ington and Lee in 1976 and earned an M.P.A.
and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978
and 1983, respectively.
Ruscio served as a professor of politics,
associate dean of the Williams School of Com-
merce, Economics, and Politics, and dean of
freshmen at W&L from 1987 until 2002, when
he became the dean of the Jepson School of
Leadership Studies at the University of Rich-
mond.
Ruscio has also taught at Worcester Poly-
technic Institute and the University of Kansas
and was a postdoctoral research scholar at UCLA. He recently completed his second
term as national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun
at W&L in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led and served on
dozens of academic, professional and civic committees.
Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a
son, Matt, age 18.
CHUCK O'CONNELL, INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
JAN HATHORN, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
The 2008-09 school year will be the sec-
ond for Jan Hathorn as Washington and Lee's
Director of Athletics. She is just the seventh
director in the University's history.
Hathorn served as the University's wom-
en's lacrosse coach for 19 seasons and as the
women's soccer coach for 14 seasons. She
had also been an assistant athletic director and
the University's Director of Physical Education
from 2002-07.
Hathorn arrived at W&L in the fall of 1987
and was charged with beginning the school's
women's soccer and lacrosse programs. She
guided the soccer team to a 129-88-9 (.591)
record from 1987-2000 and was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year twice.
In lacrosse, Hathorn turned W&L into one of the nation's elite programs, guiding
the Generals to a 222-93 (.705) record from 1989-07. Her teams produced 17 winning
seasons, nine ODAC titles and eight NCAA Tournament berths, and she was named the
ODAC Coach of the Year nine times, including in each of her final five years. Hathorn's
277 career wins (277-112) rank among the most in the history of collegiate women's
lacrosse.
Before arriving at W&L, Hathorn spent five years at Denison University, where
she coached the lacrosse team to a 55-19 overall record and five conference titles. Her
1985, 1986, and 1987 teams finished eighth in the NCAA Division III National Tourna-
ment and she was named the NCAC Coach of the Year in 1987.
Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical education from the State University of New
York at Cortland in 1982 and a M.A. in physical education from Ohio State University in
1985.
Hathorn makes her home in Lexington, where she is active in the community.

WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVER-
SITY — a small, private, liberal
arts college, is the ninth oldest
institution of higher education in
America. Founded in 1749, W&L
prides itself on the characteristics
that have earned its reputation as
a place unique and apart in the
national educational scene.
The school’s name comes from
two of America’s great leaders
who saved W&L in times of need.
George Washington saved then
Liberty Hall Academy from financial
ruin in 1796 when he gave the
school its first major endowment
gift—$20,000 worth of James River
Canal stock. The donation—at
the time the largest to any educational institution—continues today as part of the
endowment.
Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil
War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and
instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism,
and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life.
More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or
other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with
an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise.
W&L features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part of
the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees
each year and five receive Master of Laws.
With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from
50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college
town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the
ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons
beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century
storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.”
Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,
religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's
status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment.
Undergraduate student inquiries about this policy should be directed to the Dean of
Students Affairs, Elrod University Commons, (540) 458-8751, law student inquiries to
the Associate Dean for Student Services, (540) 458-8533, and employment inquiries
to the Director of Human Resources, Howard House, (540) 458-8920, Washington
and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia 24450-2116.
