Excellence through Constraint Management
"How to get the most out of what we have by turning the
problem into the solution"!!
A goal oriented management methodology based on an innovative
cost effective approach to continual improvement
Introduction
In today’s highly competitive environment it’s just not good enough to rely on experience
and intuition to know what’s right. Good intuition needs to be supplemented with a well founded
relevant body of knowledge that provides common sense practical answers that allows you to use
more effectively what you have. Such a body of knowledge is found in the internationally
acclaimed advanced management doctrine known as the "Theory of Constraints". TOC is
generally best known through the publication of the global management bestseller book “The
Goal” by Dr. Eli Goldratt. This very innovative management methodology been adopted globally
by literally 1000's of successful organizations around the world, including such names as Boeing,
Westinghouse, the United States Air Force, Navy and Marines, Lucent Technology, Nike; and
more recently in Australia by BHP. – Learn Why!!!

Workshop structure and content
The focus is on improving the system's performance through a powerful methodology of
continual process improvement, primarily through leveraging the system constraints. Emphasis
is placed on identifying the constraints and subsequently managing them. The "building blocks"
of the TOC methodology will be elaborated and are based on the 5 following steps:
Identifying the constraint (i.e. the "Bottleneck")
Exploit the Constraint (i.e. "Take what you’ve got to get 100% use of the constraint")
Subordinate to the Constraint (i.e. "Rearrange others to what you need to maintain 100%
of the constraint")
Elevate the Constraint (i.e. "Innovate to get greater than 100%)
Identify the new Constraint - continual improvement loop.
Emphasis is placed on showing the relevance of this powerful methodology to key issues facing
senior management.

"Thanks for the stimulating Critical Chain workshop you ran for us. It clarified a lot of the
questions that I had, and now it all makes much more sense. .. Critical Chain in project
management scheduling had not been clear to me prior to the workshop, I just didn’t understand
the way the buffers were to work, so thank you again for making that understandable for me." -
Bruce Moffatt Senior Project Manager from one of Australia's leading defence contractors.
"I attended your session in Perth recently and found it fascinating. I’m implementing it in one
part of our business which has always given us headaches. Now we’ve identified the constraint,
the problem has become simple to see. Great stuff." Geoff Brown Director of a leading
